Spaying (for less than 3-4lbs) Sorry I copied your neutering thread, but I have always been curious about this subject too. Lola is scheduled to be spayed in about a month. She will be about 7 1/2 months and only 2 lbs 9 oz. We were worried about her size, but the vet reassured us that she will be fine. Has anyone else spayed their dog at a small size. |
There was something like this posted about a week ago and I had the same question. My yorkie will be 5 months old on the 19 of this month and she is only 1 lb 11 oz . Goldenray yorkie breeder answered by saying everything should be fine as long as I wait for her (my yorkie) to reach at least 2 lbs or a few oz's more. Goldenray from what I understand does this often as she has her puppys spayed and neutered before they go to their new homes. I hope this helps to ease your mind a little. :) |
Daisy was spade at around 2 pounds at 7 months, she was fine. She also had to be put under at around 10 weeks old for having a broken leg set, boy she was tiny just over a pound. You do worry with these little ones but the best thing to do is find a vet that has experience with tiny dogs. I have heard a few scary stories but I think they had to do with a vet using too high a dose of anaesthetic for their tiny size, it is rare though. Ask your vet lots of questions so you can be sure your baby will be in good hands. |
I waited to have Polly spay when she was a year old. She is a little less than three pound. Polly did have a problem being put under, Her breathing got real shallow, so Doc didn't pull her baby teeth. I think some other vet would have lost Polly. Not trying to scare you all, but make sure the vet specializes in small dogs. Polly is fine, back to her little daemon self. Doc say's every once in a while he gets a small dog that will have problems. |
I think the most important thing is: To have a pre-anesthetic blood panel done as well as a full check up. Make sure your vet has a good ear to spot any sort of abnormalities of a beating heart and that should be it! It's always nice to find out just what their procedure is for the spaying. Are they using lasers for the incision or scalpal? Are they going to cautorize (sp?) or are they going to suture? Are they going to use injected anesthesia or are they going to use gas? Try to get specific on the practice and procedure so you feel comfortable while she's at the vet's for the day. And don't forget to breathe! ;) |
