Anyone have their furbaby allergy tested? Lola is always scratching. I am thinking of having her allergy tested. Has anyone done this? What does it entail? Bloodwork? Also, if you have had it done, how much did it cost and was it worth it? Thanks for your time in advance! :) :aimeeyork |
I am sorry to be posting this again, but I still need help with this. Does anyone know about this? |
Before I would go down that path - could be expensive $$$$ I would consider her food and what you are shampooing her with. What are you feeding her, what shampoo are you using, what are you using to clean the floors? Do you give her vitamins or fish oil? Let me know.. |
Lola eats Royal Canine dry food. She eats Merrick's puppy plate, turducken, and cowboy cookout. She also eats boiled chicken breasts and cottage cheese mixed in with her Merricks. For her baths (she rarely has them lately because of her broken leg and surgery) we use Buddy Wash Shampoo and Conditioner. |
Cali was itching a lot and i took her to the vet who told me to give her Benedryl which I did a couple of times but I also added Missing Link supplement to her food and just bought oatmeal shampoo. If this doesn't help in the next few weeks I may go down the testing path as well. I have no idea how much it costs. |
I got Jazzie tested a few years ago. I took her to a veterinary dermatologist. The test was about $200.00 and all they did was take some blood. The doctor suspected pollens because her "itchy" days were seasonal. The results helped us help her. Here is the top three things Jazzie is allergic to: 1. CATS!!! Seriously! I had no clue dogs can be allergic to cats! 2. Dust mites. We took out all carpeting and we now clean clean clean! 3. Pollens We switched her shampoo to Earth Bath Oatmeal and her food to Natural Balance Potato & Duck When the pollens are high, we give her over-the-counter antihistamines. But don't just run off and get them for your babies! Check with your doctor first! She is mostly itch free now. |
I tried the Royal Canine but just wasn't that pleased with it and I think other members have had trouble with itching..I am just not sure. Natural Balance is a good food along with Innova Evo (no grains) Candia, Solid Gold to name just a few. I can send you the Whole Dog Journal List if you PM me with your email address. I don't recognize the shampoo you are using but usually a good oatmeal base shampoo helps. I use Coathandlers Shampoo and Conditioner - created by a Yorkie Breeder/Show person. One thing I found that really bothered one of my girls was I was using Bleach on my tile floors and it drove one of mine crazy...I only use Ivory Soap and water and her itching stopped almost immediately. I also use the Merricks wet, Pet Tab Vitamins along with Salmon Oil and I don't have any itching issues now. |
Lola gets vitamins (Pettinic) I don't give her the fish oil because her stomach has been sensitive to salmon in the past. I clean the kitchen floor with pine sol, but she does not go in their often and to be honest, I don't clean the floor all that much :) I feel like only the vet could find what she is allergic to because it is difficult to get her to eat new things(she is very picky.) |
Oh - I stopped the Pine Sol also. I used to wash my floor with that and clean up potty problems with bleach. It really only bothered 2 of my dogs but it made them break out on their stomach and under their legs. :( Well it certainly wouldn't hurt to talk to the vet. I do feel your pain with the picky eaters. I find I have to rotate the Merricks wet everyday but am able to keep the same dry. I just started adding a teaspoon of cottage cheese. |

I was searching for posts for this, because I've finally made the appointment for Ginger to be allergy tested. It's going to cost $200  , and consist of a blood test. I'm not sure how soon we'll see the results. I realize that I may have to continue with benedryl (if it's airborne pollen allergies, for example), but am tired of dosing her up when some simple change in our lifestyle, food choice, etc. might be what's needed. What did you end up doing with Lola? I'd also love to hear more on this subject if anyone has anything to input. |
