Has anybody cured leather ear? Brandy has what appears to be "leather ear". I have done the "search" thing here on YT and "googled" it and amazingly there is really not that much info available. I'm sure its not ear mites since it's never been itchy and the ear canals are absolutely clean with no coffee ground type dirt. Just the ear leather itself is dark in places (mostly around the edges) and some loss of fur which would fall out in little clumps with black stuff on the bottom. Like little plugs of 10-15 hairs held together with a little black clump at the bottom. So after reading what I could find I am cleaning her ears with alcohol soaked cotton balls and coating them with lotrimin 1% cream. I've been doing this for about a week. No more little hair clumps appear to be falling out. I can't see any obvious lightening of the skin or any new hair growth though. Has anyones yorkie had this condition and they've cured it? If so, how long before the blackness went away and new hair started to grow? |
Edie had leather ear about 3 years ago on both ears. It was exactly as you described. We applied an antibiotic cream prescribed by her vet. It took several months before the hair grew back on one ear. On the other ear, hair never did grow back on the edge of her ear, but it is hardly noticable. The edge of her ear stayed dark and there is no hair, but otherwise appears to be healthy. Leather ear can also affect the bridge of the nose, but this did not happen to Edie. |
Thanks for your response. Are you sure the vet prescribed antibiotic cream and not antifungal? Everything I have read said antifungal which is what I have been doing. It has not affected the bridge of her nose. I seem to remember her losing the little clumps of hair last year also but it resolved on its own. I didn't know about YT then and wasn't near as observant as I am now. |
Explain leather ear please Hi, my mom recently adopted a yorkie male, 3yrs old, from a friend. The dog was in terrible condition; very wirey stiff hair, terrible haircut, long toenails, and it has NO hair on the backside of his ears. I got her to switch lots of things that his previous owner did such as his food from 'puppy chow purina' to 'Nutro Natural Choice' and she adds a supplements to the food. The shampoo from 'Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo' to 'PetGuard' all natural and conditioning shampoo. It has been about a month now, and I look at his ears every week hoping for an improvement on hair growth, i'm not sure if i'm just hoping it grows so badly i'm 'seeing' new baby hair growth or not. Exactlly what is leather ear. Thanks. |
When this happened to Brandy I just rubbed in the 1 % lotrimen cream a couple times per day for a couple weeks. I think the hair all grew back within a month or so. Now the hair on her ears looks completely normal. She does still have some darkened skin areas though. I never did find out what actually caused this. I'm assuming some type of fungus since an antifungal cream resolved it. |
Thanks for the help. It was really concerning me and I'm trying so hard to get this dog back to looking like a normal yorkie! Will start treatment today. |
I have also heard with leather ear to make sure they stay warm. Don't know how true this is but if you touch your baby's ears and they are cool they might need extra clothing to keep them warm. |
ears As a groomer I have treated dozens of Yorkies with this problem..it takes longer then a week to cure. Once the black gunk is removed, keep the ears cleaned daily and in a few weeks hair should return...keeping the ears warm is important as posted, so in the summer months it is good to get outside..in the winter, make sure they are cover with a knit cap if they go out. Listerine works well to clean them...and I never put anythign on the ear after it was clean expcept a non OIL product..that is what caused the problem in the beginning.. |
Will have her try to get some sun for him outside more often. The previous owner washed him with a mixture of 'Johnson and Johnson' baby soap and tea tree oil. If oil is what causes this, then why is it that tea tree oil is suposed to be an antifungal? Just wondering, confused. |

Mr. Big's ears are half bald on the back side. Up and down not sideways. There is no gunk or build up of any kind. His nose is not losing any hair. BUT Ridge is losing hair on his nose while his ears are perfectly fine. Anyone have any thots on this? Sylvia |
Hey guys, So I'm new here, and I plan on posting quite a few pics of my two boys in the main forum, but the reason I found this forum, was obviously, I think my little guy Jack may have leather ear. I tried to get decent pics, but I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if that is what he has. I planned on calling my vet on monday, but if it IS leather ear, I'm assuming alcohol and lotrimin 1% may do the trick? Last winter he started losing a little bit of hair on the bridge of his nose, and this winter, it seems it's his ears, so it sounds like that's what he has. I wasn't too sure, one of his ears is starting to peel a little bit. Any help is appreciated, here are some pics of his ears.... (he doesn't always look so irritated - he was sleeping and his hair was a mess and he didn't want to look at me, let alone open his eyes haha) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...s/DSC01826.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...s/DSC01824.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...s/DSC01822.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...s/DSC01821.jpg |
My baby doesn't have leather ear rather she has "leather nose"! :( Is it safe to put anti-fungal meds on the bridge of her nose? What if she licks it off? Is that ok? |
I have a wonderful mentor who breeds show yorkies. She informed me that when I bath my Yorkies to make sure the ears are cleaned and then dry. Drying is the secret as not to let them dry naturally, otherwise they will form what is known as leather ear. |
Another tip I read, it to not shave the ear hair too closely in the winter months, as this can cause leather ear. |
