How much is enough? Recently I just found a dog food my little guy will finally eat but now I want to know just how much is enough? I am feeding him Merricks wet puppy plate food and I will try to get him to switch over to dry some eventually but for now I am just happy he is eating food period. My question is how do I know he is eating enough for him not to have another Hypoglycemic attack from not getting enough sugar? I am currently giving him about 2 tablespoons of food and he is eating about half of it. Does this sounds about right. I do this about 3 times a day and also give him some nutrical in the AM. He is currently 4 1/2 months old and weighs about 3 pounds. Thanks! |
That sounds about right. I have always given mine however much they would eat. I have never found my yorkies to overeat. |
Thanks - it is just so weird going from a lab I used to have to this tiny Yorkie. I mean I know he is going to obviously eat less but it is so astonishing how MUCH less. I just wanted to make sure he was getting enough and I do not want him to crash on me again - that was too scary! Thanks again. :-) |
You might want to just leave some dry food out that he can eat when ever he wants then also give the moist. Thats what I do with mine. They eat more the older they get but yorkies are still very small eaters. |
I've always let my yorkies free feed. I suppose there are some that might over eat, but mine never have. |
I have tried leaving dry food out for him to free feed but the same amount of kibble is there when I return. I have tried Eukanuba Small bites, Nutro Rice and Lamb and Royal Canine and he will NOT eat any of the dry if I leave it out. I just fed him lunch and mixed some of his gravy from the merricks wet in his dry Eukanuba small bites and he seemed to eat a few bites of that but not much. Any other suggestions for getting him to eat some dry? |
Try boiling a peice of chicken and then pour a little of the juice on the dry food, let it cool so the dry food goes mushy then feed it to him,my Molly loves it done like that, then you can give him the cooked chicken as treats,or even put a few peices in with the food,Gill |

I always free feed that way I know that they are getting enough! They dont over eat! |
Molly is 10pounds,surely if I fed her that much at each meal she would be huge, now we have her on a food that is good for her she will eat as much as you give her, and still look for treats. My problem I think, will be an over weight dog, like my Bichon who battles me constantly for food,Gill |
