losing puppy coat? HELP! I am a new yorkie mom and my wee Duncan is about 15 weeks old and his 'fur' is getting thinner... should I be worried? During my last vet just a couple weeks back the vet said he looked great and was healthy. He also mentioned that he looked like he was going to 'blow is coat' ??? I understand his color is changing, and I see that his face is getting lighter and the top of his head shows light roots but... is this fur thinning normal? Let me know -- Worried Yorkie Mom:aimeeyork |
It sounds like your little one will be nice and silky, and yes the silks do tend to lose some of the thickness of their puppy coats. |
I know my daughter's tiny male yorkie went through a real "ugly" stage where his chest and his stomach were bald and he seemed to be losing his hair and I think it was around when he was 4 months old. She says it's growing in now, but I haven't seen him in a while so I don't know. I have also heard that they can lose their hair from some of the vaccines, but I don't know. Maybe someone at the vet's office would know too? |
Tia is going through this right now too. EXACTLY as you have described. She has "grey" coming in on her head, and really just looks like she is going bald. She finally gets a bath tonight, I had to wait awhile after the flea treatment and I'm hoping that may help fluff her up a bit. I'm hoping her coat will end up pretty, she is indeed in that "ugly duckling coat" stage - 4 months old ;) |
My little Gus got a little bald on the top of his head. At first I was scared too--but my Vet didn't seem worried. |
Nemo is 8.5 months old, and believe me when I say that he looked like he was balding when he was younger especially when I first got him, I was so worried, about his coat, even my family use to make comments about his coat being so unattractive, and people use to always ask me was his coat falling out, and it really bothered me, because my friend yorkie who came from the same litter, was full and thick, he has more of the wavy coat, which now is hard to for her to handle, because of constant matts, well needless to say I have no worries, because Nemo's coat gets better and better as he gets older, and no matts, just a straight silky shiney coat that just falls nicely down either side of his back, and yes it has even thicken some, but not too much, I am glad for that, because I don't have to comb him much, all he has to do is shake one good time and he's good to go...."carefree coat".....now my friend on the other hand, she has had to have her dog shaved down completely, because he was so matted, and evidently she was'nt caring for his coat like she should, so now she keeps him that way, because it is easier for the type of coat he has, and his hair grows really fast, where Nemo's grows kinda slow.... I too have a question about this puppy coat thing? When will they lose it? because in pictures, Ginger's hair looks silky.. when it's not! its just greasy looking but i give her a bath every 2 weeks.. Oreo on the other hand is just fuzzy and fluffy!!! lol when will their puppy coat leave?! lol |
Thanks Thank you all -- I thought that it was probably OK... as the vet had said Duncan was healthy and he seems happy, active and eats well, but it is really good to hear from other yorkie parents that I should not 'panic'. I just keep brushing and combing him daily -- and see that he eats well and his coat will be what it is. So far is it really soft -- but he is looking a bit like he needs his roots done |
Gracie's coat has been coming out by the brush full! She's grey on top of her head and I can't believe how her coat has thinned out. I feel like she should be bald all over, as much fur is on the brush every time! |
MY Rambo was the only fluff ball when he was a puppy. His hair is kinda on the thin side but my vet said it was normal for his hair to be thin. Like people, they have different hair texture as well. |
Worried Mommy We noticed my Peppino's hair on top of his head looked like he had gray roots and thinning on top of his head. I just picked him up fron the groomer and he looks bald. He just turned 5 months old. Is this normal? Thank you, Sandi |
