Treats I've only have my Yorkie for for about 3 weeks now and would like to know what is the best kind of treats to give them. I'm giving him milk bone Biscuits for small breed dogs. so far he loves it,he can eat a whole one at a time. he keeps stealing my Lab's rawhide bones. should I just buy him some small rawhide bones or is that not good for him, I've seen them at the store and they have tiny ones. what is the best chewing treat for him? |
I don't do the raw hide only because I have always been told it is not good for them. NHow I use to in the beginning give them the raw hide but I hated it when they got it so small as I was scared they could choke. I give mine the pigs ears to chew on. And for treats I give them fresh veggies that I chop up small for them. Carrots, green beans, peas and so on. |

I can't say there is no danger but I can tell you this I have used them for years and so have others I know. Oh they LOVE veggies for sure... |
i chop up a baby carrot for treats and occasionally green bean. and liver treats. and cherios. these are the treats they get most often. the vet will tell you to stay away from rawhide. they told me they have had to open up too many stomachs and pull out rawhide. |
I think raw hide is ok IF AND ONLY IF you supervise the pet while they have it. I, too, worry about when the rawhide gets small. I will usually throw it away when I see it getting that way. Rawhide is said to be rough on a dogs stomach and not all that digestible. So If you have a puppy, I suggest stearing clear until he's older. Pig ears? They're alright but agian I would like to stress supervision with them. They can shard off in sharp pieces in the dogs mouth. but they are more gentle on the dogs stomach then rawhide. I suggest Booda Cornstarch Bimples and Velvet Chews. They're digestible, they crumble rather then shard off, and come in a variety of flavors ranging from bacon, chicken, peanut butter, etc. Soft treats I recommend Bil-Jac, Pup Corn(comes in peanut butter or chedder) and Tigger loves Canine Carryouts (bacon strips), they work great for training. Hard treats I recommend Marro bone by Milkbone, anything by Old Mother Hubbord and bully sticks. |
If you decide to feed veggies please steer clear of Broccoli, cauliflower, avocados, and tomatoes. Many of these give them gas and/or are toxic for dogs. |
Thank you all for all the advice, it is greatly apreciated. he loved the pigs ear, ate a half of one already, I was amazed. I will also try all the other treats you guys sugest and the veggies. thanks again |
I give Gucci brocolli once in awhile a small amount that is , I didn't know that it was toxic. I learn something new on here everyday. Thanks... Gina |
Treats Miko loves his Nylabones, just for chewing, (make sure you get the appropriate chewing level. There is a softer one for pups, then durable for adults) and they also have an edible one. He is really picky with treats but he LOVES the bacon ones, and also bill jack liver treats! They are tiny, and both kind are easy to break in pieces for tiny pups. Raw Hide is a BIG NO-NO with Yorkies. Its just too much of a choking risk, plus it can give the gas or diarreia (spelling). Hope this helps! |
no raw hides. not digestable ,,, get bully sticks instead, the are digestable. lexi just loves them...they last a long time too... |
We use Charlie Bear Cheese and Egg treats for rewards, and we use Nylabones for chewing. Both of our dogs will do ANYTHING for the Charlie Bears. We like them because they are small and only have about 3 calories each, so they don't mess up their diet. As for the Nylabones, they like them so much that they will fight over who gets the favorite one. How they decide which of the 4 or 5 they have out is their favorite, I don't know. :p |
We do pig ears, baby carrots, and cheese. Sometimes I put a little cheese in a kong. they love that. We also do Mother Hubbard biscuits. |
