paw pads Finally getting warmer here in Pittsburgh....so I took Bella and Lexi for a walk yesterday. We walked up the street and back. No sidewalks... we live in a newly developed housing plan and everyone just sort of walks up and down the street. Last night Bella my 9 month old was chewing at her back paws... took a good look at them and the pads of her little feet are all scuffed and looks like they are peeling now...... I FEEL HORRIBLE! Is this normal and do they toughen up? Should I be putting something on them.... I think she would just lick it off if I put anything on them.... ! Lexi the 6 month old is just fine and she walked the same walk..... ????? These dogs cause me more worry sometimes than my two daughters!!!!! |
I have the same exact problem!! Nikko has pretty much been indoors most of the winter. The other day i took him outside for a walk and when we came back, he was actually bleeding from one of his paw pads. He was so excited to be outside that he was pulling on the leash and must have scraped his paws on the asphalt. He was not in any pain and I would not have known until he walked on the kitchen floor which is white and i noticed the blood. I checked it and there was nothing stuck in it, it was just scraped. i hope someone can help us with this issue!! |
aww that doesnt sound too comfortable! im sorry i dont have any advice, i hope someone can help you out! |
Awww I bet her feet hurt. The pavement is hard on them. |
Maybe a little bit of vaseline on the pads? |
I don't think you can put anything on them to protect them. Just take shorter walks until they toughen up. (After they heal up of course) |
Maybe some Paw Wax would help.... |
Kelly, Thanks for the link. That might work. |
The paw pads will toughen up in time, but they do make a pad cream you might want to use. |

It's amazing all the products you learn about when you (used to) work in a pet store. ;) |
try some bag balm. it won't hurt them if they lick. |
After every bath I give my girls I always put moisturizer (that I use on myself) on their pads and tummys because I know how dry my skin gets in the winter. I'v never had your problem though. Also during the winter my girls won't wear shoes, so when we go for walks outside I put this wax/cream that I bought on their pads before going out and it protects their pads from the cold and salt. I didn't realize that that could happen to dogs. I thought their pads were just always naturally tough. I guess you learn a new thing every day! Hope you find something that works :) |
