Rabies Shot...is it really necessary?? What do you guys think about this article: http://www.wsvn.com/features/article...tigations/C30/ Otis is due for his rabies vaccination this year, and I really want to skip it. He had one in 2003 and still has a big bump and is missing hair where they administered the shot. (see this post: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ghlight=rabies) I already told the vet my concerns. She said they would run tests on Otis and see if he's truly allergic to the vaccination, and if he isn't, they are obligated under the law to administer the shot. But I personally don't want to run any tests. I just want to skip his rabies vaccination altogether. Period. The bump looks so ugly. It's a bald hard bump near his armpit and I don't want to do that to him again. Has anyone ever skipped a rabies shot before? |
I didn;t skip...even though i really feel like it:( I do not think it is necessary to take all the boosters every year...we, humans, don;t need it...why does our pets need it? I do hope they change the law here in dade county. |
I heard you could do a "titer test" and if they have enough of the antibodies still they will accept that for the license and you don't need another rabies. I am not sure how they do a "titer test" but I would ask my vet about it. |
im not going to get toby a rabies shot at all.... they can make the dog sick, toby is an inside dog and rarely goes outside so there is a minimal risk/ liklihood that he woudl ever come in contact with another animal with this disease |
You guys Chachi gets his rabies on the next visit. What do you mean when you say it makes them sick. Can they have a bad reaction that could result in death. I really don't want to take any chances but its the law in our state that they have to have it. That doesn't seem right if it makes them sick. |

Our county won't issue licsences without a rabies shot. So Dozer has his and Bailey is going to get his. I've talked to my vet about it and he assures me that he's given rabies to a lot of small breed dogs and none of them have had bad reactions from it. Plus, dogs have to have their rabies vaccine to be boarded and go to obedience class (both of which I intend on doing). |
titer test is a blood test done to see if they have enough anti bodies - i do these - the best ones are the ones sent to cornell university but very expensive as it was $154 for the parvo distemper one and the other lab it was like $75 but then you are not over vaccinating |
That's really high... A Parvo and Distemper titer runs about $50 here. You can have a titer run for rabies, however there have not been any studies to show what level is protective and unfortunately most local governments won't accept it as proof of vaccination.... Some area allow for a rabies waiver when giving the vaccine would be detrimental to the animal's health (this could possibly be an option for Otis, considering his reaction to in the past). In a normal, healthy animal, however, the law typically mandates that it must be given. |
