Heartworm Question I want to start my 10 month old on heartworm prevention because summer is coming up and I don't want him to get sick. I was planning on using Revolution since it prevents heartworm, fleas and ticks. My question is should I have a bloodtest done on him first before I start the medication? |

Being 10 months, i would get it done...but it takes 6 months for the larvae to develop and this is why we should test our babies every 6 months :) |

YES! Your vet should not even give you the Heartworm Prevention Medication without performing the test. If you give the meds without testing you can kill you dog! If infested and you treat with a preventive.... You dog has a very poor chance of surviving. Thats why you test before treating in the first place. Better safe than sorry. Its not an expensive test, just do it. |

JMO--But you should keep your babies on heartworm prevention medicine all year long. Just to be safe. :) |

Thanks for the info. I will set up an appointment with my vet to get the blood test and then I guess he will give me the meds or I can always get them on-line. |

At what age do you normally put pups on heartworm medication? |

Heartworm is not a vaccine as we think of when we talk about distemper or such. Heartworm meds kill any and all larvae that have grown in the blood stream in the PAST 30 days. It does not work forward and that is why it is so important to give it on schedule. I use Ivermectin 70mcg for each dog. I know most use Heartgard (PLUS) and other tabs, but I use the straight Ivermectin and have had not one problem in over 10 years.. |
