would changing food help? please read nala eats tons of grass and i mean that literally!! she never throws up though. my mom thinks that maybe she lacking something in her diet and thats why she eats so much grass. a friend of mine also said she heard dogs eat grass if they have worms and nala has had tapeworms but she got meds for it and is on heartworms pills that had the dewormer in it. she has been eating grass ever since she's been able to go out in the backyard. i feed her purina puppy chow, i know it's not the "best" dogfood out there but she didn't seem to have any problems with it (when i first got her accidently switched her food to that without doing it a little at a time) and it's what my other 2 dogs eat so i figured in the long run it would be easier. it's really weird that she can eat so much grass and never get sick and most other dogs i know if they even nibble on it the throw up. |
Okay...everybody thinks they are a dog expert...Mojo always ate what i tought was best for him, takes supplenents and still everytime he goes in my backyard he acts like a rabbit...i mean, when i say somebody has to cut the grass i didn;t mean him, and not with his teeth...:P I did 2 fecal exams and no worms, basicaly, he just enjoys eating grass... Now, i would recomend that you offer a better quality food to Nala, and believe me, in the long run will come out better and also cheaper. |
You could certianly try switching dog foods, but it may not help - she may just like to taste and texture of grass, a lot of dogs do. I really don't know which vitamins she would be getting from the grass. Maybe you could try giving her some cooked veggies once a day and see if that helps? She may just like her roughage ;) |
Definitely switch dog foods, I don't know if it will help with the grass eating but it's still better for her. I think Purina is one of the worst on the market. I recommend: Canidae Eagle Pack Solid Gold My baby is super picky and she won't eat anything but Royal Canin even though I've tried to switch her numerous times, if I had it my way she would be eating one of the above. |
i can't find alot of the dog foods you all use b/c i live in a small town with a small town walmart (that's our only choice) the nearest petco is 2 hrs. away but i will look this evening and see what i can find. i don't know too much about this subject so bare with me. isn't if the first ingredient in a food is corn you should stay away from it? also i THINK i read somewhere where someone said the less fiber or fillers in a food the less they will poop? i told my mom about this and she wants to change the other 2 dogs food b/c of this. can anyone help me out on those last 2 questions? |
i pretty sure we have iams, is that a good choice? can anyone recommend a couple of brands that are pretty well known that would be good for her? |
Sorry but I don't think you're going to find any good quality dog foods at Walmart. Iams isn't good. You're right, corn in the first couple ingredients is a bad thing. You want to see some type of meat meal..no by-products. Go check out some of these companies web sites, see which one you think is best and they will ship it to you, or else make the drive and buy lots. Does your vet sell dog food? and yes, a better quality food will result in less poo. |
I feed my puppy Eukanuba food, its suppose to be really good for them, pricey, but one of the best out there. They also have a website, www.eukanuba.com. You can read about the food and what they put in it and possibly order it online. I know they have a hotline number you can call and ask questions regarding nutrition. Try it, it might work for you. There must be some type of smaller pet store somewhere closer to you, maybe give them a call and see what brands they carry then check them out on line or post them here and we can give you our opinion. |

Just checked out Eukanuba...second ingredient in their small breed puppy food is chicken by-product meal, that's beeks, feet, and other yucky stuff. I wouldn't feed that to my dog :( I think it's really important to learn how to read ingredient labels on dog food as a company can say whatever it wants about their product but they can't lie about the ingredients. Even though chicken is the first ingredient, it contains so much water that that is what makes up for most of the weight so really the main ingredient is by-products. |
If you live in a small town, I'm guessing you might have a feed store?? At our local feed store they sell solid gold (which I would put my dog's on if they would eat it but they won't) and what we buy "chicken soup for the puppy's soul". Our dogs really like that. No corn and several sources of protein, also oatmeal and potatoe (I think). I haven't heard any reviews from this board about it. But it looks good to me. And it is not too pricey, maybe $7-8 for 5 lb. bag. One of my dog's got dry skin while on royal canine and my vet recommended trying different foods and using the oil supplement you put on their food. After being on the chicken soup dog food for a month she is recovering. I don't know if it is the food or different shampoo or the oil that helped. But anyway that's my 2 cents. |
Well Science Diet is better than Iams and Purina...the feed store sounds like a great place to check. |
i will check with the feed store but chances are it's not going to have anything i'm looking for. i looked online at petsmart but i can't read any of the labels. it's seems like everyone uses royal canine is that a good choice if i can't find anything locally? |
