taking yorkie outside I have a 5 months old yorkie, now that the weather is warmer the vet advised me that I should take him outside for walks . But I'm very reluctant to that as I'm very scared of bacterias and germs on the ground . I only take him outside in his bag . what do you recommend is there a possibility that he catches a disease if he goes out walking ? Thanks :confused: |
i think he's going to have to go outside sometime. if not for walks then for socialization with other doggies at least. if he's had all his shots then there shouldn't be anything to fear. my baby's paws get baby wiped whenever we come back in from the outside. |
Yep there is a possibility. Loki got Giardia probably from a walk when he was little - and the vet gave him some drugs that cleared it up in a few days. Kids can also get germs playing in dirt. There's no reason not to let them go outside. Loki and I go for a walk (sometimes two) every day. He has always been trained to potty outside - even in the winter! He's perfectly healthy. I even let him go to daycare and training class and play with (more like beat up on) 100 pound dogs - he survives! You have to let them be dogs :-) Just wipe the paws when you come inside. :animal-pa |

I agree completely! I think sometimes "we" can be a little overprotective of these little babies. I realize it has a lot to do with their size and overall cutie-patootie-ness but really, they are dogs and should be allowed to do the things that dogs do. Tatum is a very well rounded dog..... she is quite pampered inside the house but can tear the world up outside playing with her Australian Shepherd sister (4 times her size at least). I know we don't pamper her half as much as some people on YT do theirs and to each their own but I think she is a very happy dog. They need to socialize and get out there and play like a dog. I think it would be a fairly unhappy existence for them if they never have that chance. I say as long as he is up to date on his shots and you take the proper precautions for his safety, you (and he) should be totally fine. Most importantly, enjoy your time together playing and having fun and not worrying unnecessarily over all the things that could happen. I have to agree. Tucker would rather be outside than in. I wish our yard was fenced, he'd be out more! His brother, who the breeder kept, is outside all day in nice weather. It makes me sad to think of a dog, no matter how loved and pampered, not having a chance to romp in the great outdoors! And being outside and around other dogs will build up his resistance to germs, in my opinion. |
My Hubby said don't worry our good canadian winter has killed the germs. Your dog needs natural sunlight and to be socialized outdoors. If he is vaccinated there is less chance of him catching diseases. |
I agree with those who have already posted.My little bundle of energy -5 months-loves to go for walks and meet people and dogs. She loves to play with our cat in the garden and look out of the gate to our driveway and see what's going on.She is fully immunised and has never had any illness at all.I love my walks with her.She off leads down by the river and has a ball.We are meeting up with 8 other Yorkies tomorrow for a walk. I will post some pictures afterwards! She must need a lot of games if you keep her inside! |
I got Maddie at 8 weeks and didn't even think of the germs in the ground...so, she was outside a lot and I also potty trained her to go outside. I never had a problems with her getting sick, thank goodness! I think your baby will love to romp and play in the great outdoors! He may act a little scared or shy at first, but he will soon grow to love it! |
