Rawhide? Hello everyone, glad to see a new kid. Adorable. My question is that I have found these tiny rawhide chew bones. Are these things OK? I had no problem giving them to my lab in moderation, but this little guy is another thing. I hope everyone has a great day and week end. Thanks for your time. :) |
Please don't give your Yorkie rawhide. You should never give any small breed dog, like the Yorkie, rawhide. It is too hard to digest and if there is a problem the vet will charge an arm and a leg to assist. My vet says they cannot digest rawhide. He did suggest milkbones. And I know Greenies are completely digestable for the little dogs. They are good for them too. I get them at Petsmart or Petco. Hope this helps. |
chews for yorkies  You can also use booda velvets for them, these are also digestable. I have heard a couple of horror stories about yorkies and the greenies, where they got a chunck off and they lodges in their throats then swelled up and they could not breathe. I have only read about it on the internet, do not actually know anyone that it happened to, so don't know how true it is or isn't. I use the boodas, both the bones and the velvets and my guys love them. They come in different flavors, and shapes. |

I don't suggest Greenies when your baby is little, but when they get bigger (10 months or later) I think it's okay, just my opinion of course. Yoda loves his Greenies, he gnaws and chews them all day. I would think that anything that breaks off has the potential to be lodged in their throat. |
Greenies Didn't realize that they were made for smaller animals too. I know that mine have developed a love for the spearmint, and pepermint bimple booda bones, and they are really good for the teeth. I have a 6 year old that has always loved the booda's and he has never had to have his teeth cleaned, where the 2 that don't like to chew on anything and are only 2 need a teeth cleaning badly |
Thanks for the info Thanks to everyone for the quick response. I am so glad that I asked. I was afraid to give them to him, and I am glad that I waited. We are discovering all kinds of fun games here. Yesterday casey discovered scrunchies. I had some that are covered with denim and I tied a knot in them. Well they are just the right size to retrieve and shake around. Casey still isnt giving the cat much attention other than when the cat is playing with one of his toys. If he sees it he is determined that the sparkle ball should be his. I hope that one day he will be interested in some play. The cat thinks he is a dog. We found him all but dead when mowing. The vet said he was only 3 to 4 weeks old, so my lab and I nursed and raised him. He is not like other cats, LOL :p ( that is a understatement.) So I really hope they will one day be able have play  |
Thanks for the info on the "Booda Bones"! Toto has several Booda toys but so far she only gets the "Greenies" ... will have to try the booda. fasteddie's right ... anything they chew has the potential to break off in a piece that can lodge in their throats! We watch for a greenie to get small then sneak it and throw it out! :o My son's Border Collie used to love those rawhide bones that have the knot in each end ... his wife just happened to be home the day she choked on one!! She is a nurse and even she had a difficult time getting it out of her throat! I'm thankful I was not the one with Missy that day because I probably wouldn't have known what to do!! Toto loves the pig ears and rarely gets one ... we watch her and as soon as she has a little string chewed, we cut it off with scissors! We like to indulge her with all the things she likes ... but try to be very careful!! :) We also try not to leave any of her chew things that are edible where she can get them if we aren't right there to supervise! ;) |
Mia STEALS the HUGE rawhide bones from my 100 lb lab, drags them to a hiding spot and chews away. I bought some of the tiny shoes and have let her just chew the laces off. Takes her forever, then I take them away. Vet said the tiny bit would be ok as long as we keep the big whole stuff away. |
We give Mei Mei boodas and greenies , with supervision of course. About one or two times a month we will give her a pig's ear. She goes crazy over the pig ears!! When any of these get to be to small or about 1-2 inch, we throw it away. Just be careful and do what you feel comfortable with! :) |
We also give Toto Booda bones and Greenies. Her all time fave is a pig ear but she seldom gets one and only if we watch her and either trim off the slimy stringy part and when she chews it down small ... we throw it out!! How often do your babies get a Greenie?? The little ones shaped like a toothbrush. |
Hi Toto's Mom! We give greenies about 1-2 per week. I think the pig ears will always be her favorite..........we have to watch her really carefully, because she will tear it up in no time! |
