Snorting sound Hi Everyone, I'm new to this forum but have enjoyed reading the posts. My yorkie's name is Molly and she's 3 years old. I have to say, she is the cutest yorkie I've ever seen :aimeeyork . For as long as I can remember Molly has experienced occassional snorting fits. She will stretch out her neck and start making snorting noises as if she is attempting to get air. This will go on for short periods of time. I usually just talk to her calmly and gently stroke her throat. It seems to soothe her. She doesn't have any side affects and always goes back to do what she was before her attack. I've taken her to the vet and the vet treated her for kennel cough. I don't believe that is what it is. I took her to another vet and the vet couldn't explain what it was and suggested I video tape her. After lenghty research online I found what I think may be the problem. From what I read the symptoms point to reverse sneezing spasms. Apparently this is harmless and doesn't hurt her. Do any of your yorkie's experience this? |
Yes, I asked my vet about it and he recommends holding their muzzle and givingthen an abrupt short breath of air directly into the nasal passages. I hope this helps. :D |
I'm so gld you wrote about this! Bella has been doing this and I couldn't describe it--- It was driving me crazy!!!!! My vet didn't know what to do. |
Both of my yorkies do this too. |
My pom has that too and it is the reverse sneeze thing. |
Both of my yorkies do this, too. |
My 10 month Yogi had been doing this for 5-6 months. I took him to the Vet 2 weeks ago because it got so bad one night, he fell over on the bed as if he was either dizzy or exhausted and it scared me. The Vet did X-rays and gave him a sedative and looked down his trachea and said nothing appeared abnormal. He put him some Amoxicillin and said we would talk after he finished them. Well he couldn't tolerated the anitb's, and it never decreased his episodes. As long as "collapsed trachea" was ruled out, we can deal with the rest. The more I talk with folks with Yorkies, the more I find that there are many that have this problem. Its so strange sounding when it happens though. |

My vet told me in detail what causes it in many small breeds. It has to do with the soft palatte. Because they are smaller dogs they tend of have smaller soft pallates and sometimes they can be a little too soft or under developed which causes them to go into these reverse sneezing fits. Gently hold their muzzle and give an abrupt short breath of air into their nasal passages. This should help stop it. If their mouth is open then just closing it will sometimes help if not do the above. I hope this helps ya'll. |
yes.... my maltese and one of my yorkies does it...... I was told to squeeze the nose as it happens and it will stop. I don't know if it is coincedence at this point but it has been working. |
Both of my yorkies do this occassionally. I always put a finger over their nose for a couple seconds and it stops immediately. |
Both of my yorkies have done this. It seems to happen especially if they get over-excited. I read on a yorkie information site about the reverse sneezing. I think that's probably what it is. They do it for a few seconds and stop. I never read about the holding the muzzle and breathe towards their nose. HMM, I'll try it next time. That or hold their nose. Mine haven't had any severe attacks where I thought they were in danger. It's amazing, reading these stories about the vets.........If it's so common, why don't vets recognize it for what it is and reassure the owners that it's relatively common? |
Welcome to YT :D Georgie does this too as well as sneezing I don't get too concerned because it's usually when we are playing. |
I'm glad I read this - my Oakley does this snorting thing as well. I've tried to keep track when this happens, and i don't really see a pattern. Sometimes it happens when he's playing, sometimes it happens when he's just sitting around. I do hope it's nothing serious. I just leave him alone when it happens and calmly talk to him asking him if he's ok. I don't know what else I could do. |
Dawn, I thought the same thing after we left the Vets, why don't they just come up with a diagnosis like "small honkers syndrome" or something LOL, I guess when your standing in front of them with this desperate look on your face and asking to please check it out, they do and m aybe are scared to dismiss it lightly because of the collapsed trachea thing and that problem can be fatal. I don't know  Steph |
Maggie does the same thing. Its almost like she cant breath out of her nose. |
