On her records when we got Baby Blessing it states the Dew Claws were
removed, however she still has the left one :( and also :mad: :sad: with the thought of her having to go through getting it removed now. I was told that they just missed the left one, I let the breeder know right away but haven't heard back from them. My question is will it be ok if she doens't have it removed. All our former dogs were done so I don't know what problem can arise , if any. I do know she occasionally chews on it and licks it a lot. I appreciate others input on what you think we should do.

I think they are okay if they still have it you just have to watch because it can get caught on things. If mine hadnt had theirs removed I wouldnt remove when they were older. I think it would be too painful

My Biewers have theirs and you just can't forget that they have them and not trim them when you clip the others. It shouldn't be a problem if you keep an eye on it...

Pixie has her dew claws. I have to remind her groomer to cut them all the time. It's never been a problem.

It is possible it grew back..sometimes they do if the root is not completely removed..don't fret over it..it is a very minor thing. Best wishes

If Baby B were a Labrador running through the field chasing down game I would worry.

But since your Baby is a pampered house pup, its not a big deal.

Removing the dew claws is super important in working dogs because of the types of environments they are exposed to. They could get those dew claws caught in the brush, on the fence, in the roots of trees when chasing something down a hole, or whatever the case may be. Catching a dew claw when moving at the speed some of these dogs do can mean serious injury for some. But just the same, not trimming the nail and then catching it on the fabric of the sofa as they are jumping off can cause some major hurt. Its all in the up keep and exposure. Will you keep the nail trimmed? if the answer is yes, then your fine. If its no, then it should be removed. Is your Baby in the house on tile and slick surfaces mostly? or is she on burber carpet and tweed sofas that are great at catching nails?

Only you really know if its a must go or not. Ask your vet... if she is licking it alot... is it cause she is catching it alot? Is it already bothering her? Only you know... Trust yourself.

Thanks to you all for replying back. I am very up on keeping the nails trimmed and filed so I think I shall just let it be since others have them and no problem. I will keep a watch on it though. I have been keeping it filed down real good. I was worried about it cause I just couldn't stand the thought of her going through the pain of its removal.

Since she is worrying at it so much, it probably is one that grew back in because they didn't get it down far enough when originally done. I probably would just ignore it other then trimming unless she won't leave it alone eventually. If months from now she is still chewing on it then you may need to make a decision to remove it. I've known people to remove them as adults and it's not as terrible as you think. Probably what is happening is it just started growing back in and so she is chewing right now and will get over doing that. Good luck.

Pippa didnt have hers removed at birth.
But she caught one on her hind leg and couldn't walk on the leg properly for a while so it was decided when she was spayed the vet would remove all 4 then.
I was quite nervous but all went well she wasnt bothered by it at all.
That was 5-6 weeks ago and you cant even tell that they were ever there.
By the way she is 18 months old

The dew claws are just usless to them. But it will cause her no pain or problems having it stay there. The only problem is that she could get it caught on something. Which is not likely anyway. My suggestion would be to leave it alone. And if you have her spayed or something then just have them remove it then. It is a very simple thing, and would take no time at all. Good luck!
