Help, what am I to do????? Hi, I don't know what to do, shorlty after we got Baby Blessing I started hand feeding her when she was going through, the I don't want to eat stage :( and since she didn't seem to be eating enough I kept it up, I know it is my fault but I was afraid she would get ill and after our loosing Cassie I was so in fear of something happening to our new baby. I ask if anyone else has gone through this, what did you do to break the habit. I have been told if she is hungry she will eat but I have tried that to a certain degree and it didn't work. I am now putting a tiny bit of Nutri-Cal rubbed onto the dry food trying to entice her to eat on her own, but I definately don't want to form that habit for her, can someone tell me what to do to get this hand feeding habit broke, besides stop it Patti. Thanks, Patti and ~~Baby Blessing~~ |
Not sure if this is the best advice or not, but when Eddie was being finicky in the beginning, we poured a little bit of beef boullion over his dry food. It softened it and added a little more flavor to it. We gradually weened him off that. |
I used to soak Bugaboo's kibble in Chicken Broth. And then weaned him off. Or did he wean himself? Anyway I wish you luck with your finicky one. |
I have never experienced this before. I have soaked the dry trying to motivate her into eating on her own but it don't work, even cooked tiny bit of the pup-a-roni and poured that over her dry but then she just looks at me, finally I have given in and then hand fed it to her. I think Mommie here is the one that needs to take a puppy class, hubby says she has bonded real good to me, that is for sure lol. I love her dearly but I want her to eat on her own :-) She eats real good when I hand feed her :-( I shall try the boullian again and see if that works. Thanks, |
You may also want to try putting the food right on the floor, or a very flat plate. Some seem to not want to put their nose in a dish. I have no idea why but it sometimes works. |
**** You might also put a towel on the table and see if she won't eat pieces of chicken from a plate while you are eating it. (Place pieces near the edge of the plate - with your hand being close to her food - which she is used to.) Perhaps just being so close to you (and sharing dinner with you) might help her start eating from a plate by herself. ...then gradually move the plate further away from yourself and gradually stop sharing her meal. Hopefully, eventually she'll be eating on her own. I guess you just have to be creative. Carol Jean |

I started hand feeding Dezi also and she is spoiled. She wants to be hand fed. I did notice this weekend, she was hungry and she went over to her plate and started picking on it. Hopefully, she will start eating on her own. |
When Rowdy was being picky - I would drizzle a bit of corn syrup over his food to entice him to eat it - he also got some much needed sugar/calories - it's kinda like nutrical without the vitamins! |
Tripp does this sometimes, he has to know where my mom is at all times and won't eat if she leaves the room, he has to go see where shes going, so at feeding time i have to sit on the floor and tell him to eat and i start hand feeding him but slowly lower my hand into the bowl and he will transfer to there. that worked with Tucker also when he was not drinking enough i had him lick it off my finger then slowly put my finger in his dish and he started drinking. i hope that helps, good luck! |
Lola won't even eat her most favorite food out of a dish! She become so accustomed to hand feeding that she continues to expect it. I have held out most of a day to see if she would give in....well, she didn't. She does appear to be training me well though! |

If you give her time she will eat it, you need some tough love Mom! It's really important that you teach her to eat on her own. You never know if you may have to be away from her for a few days, you wouldn't want that trauma to be made worse by not eating. A day is not a long time to wait. As long as you give her nutrical to keep up her sugar she won't starve in a day or two. Once she gets hungry enough she will eat. Honest! |
Thanks Teri, yep you said what my daughter asked when she was home "Mom what happened to the tough love act" lol, I guess it left when the kids all grew up and left home. Tomorrow morning Baby Blessing goes to beauty shop to get all dolled up, so gotta take those pictures tonight of that still puppy look. I still do give her the Nutri-Cal several times a day. Teri what do you think of the idea of another yorkie sister for her? I have seriously been thinking about that. Patti |
