Treats
 
We got an 11th month old Yorkie about two weeks ago. She has been having accidents in the house, I assume because she is confused. Does anyone know of healthy small treats to use as rewards when she goes outside. I don't want her to get fat, and I want her to stay healthy. Thanks. :aimeeyork

I've always used Pupperoni sticks as treats. Not sure that they are healthy. But Trixie loved them, and they worked really really well for training. Now she can't have them anymore... How about 'Solid Gold' treats (all natural), or I know quite a few people here use Cheerios.

Thanks for the ideas. I am suprised by the Cheerios? Are they good for them? Do they digest okay? :animal-pa

Yep! I think that would be a good idea. I've also heard of people using their kibble as treats.

I make my own treats so I know what's in them. Also, I can make them small enough to use as training treats

would you be willing to share your recipe???? I would love to make my own for her too, so that I know what's in them. thanks

I'm in the process of starting my own business making homemade dog treats and I'm still coming up with my own recipes and experimenting with taste/texture, etc. so I can't give you those but I have a really good peanut butter treat recipe that I got from a cookbook. Max and Abbie LOVE them. I also gave them to other doggie friends for Christmas and they loved the PB treats as well. I'll pm you the recipe.

I don't buy many of the types of treats that are made for dogs. For some reason, my dogs don't like them ---unless they get them at a neighbor's house. I don't know why they taste so much better there.

I give my dogs so many treats - here and there - that, instead of "treats," I give them healthy food and just consider it part of their daily food.

For example - for training and rewards - I usually give them pieces of chicken. I boil inexpensive chicken for them occasionally - cut it into small pieces - and store it away in plastic baggies (I usually have several in the freezer). They also like other meats, raw carrots, and many other healthy foods that I have around all the time. They get most of these foods in the evenings - so even though they are given as "treats," --- they often are really their "dinner."

If my dogs are healthy and not overweight - I don't pay too much attention to the amount they eat. I know for sure they eat enough - and it doesn't vary much.
