Now what?? Today I took Avery for his vaccinations. He's a year old, long body, lanky legs, cute as a button and a precious face. The doctor said he is NOT fat, but he's at the top of his limit. He weights 9 lbs and 3 oz. Now I know how owners are insulted when others say their dogs aren't full-blooded Yorkies. I know he is full-blooded and he's registered, just doesn't weigh within the standard range. Now what do I do? I think he often eats some of my Gracie's food, but I hate to limit HER to keep HIM from eating so much. She's just a little peanut! He honestly can't be eating too awful much as all I do is put 1/2 cup in each of their bowls twice a day. How much do you all feed your babydolls? P.S. He exercises alot. He walks three miles with us and isn't even winded! |

Don't stress about the 9 pounds. A lot of Yorkies fall above the breed standard and are still 100 percent Yorkie. As long as he's not fat and he gets plenty of exercise, I'd say you're feeding him the right amount. We keep a full bowl down all the time. |
:p Poor Avery ... he's just an active boy!! I wouldn't worry about his weight unless you can feel a layer of fat where you should be able to feel his ribs! With the amount of food he gets & the exercise .... sounds like a healthy boy to me! :) Your vet might just be concerned about "later on" ... that's what ours points out about Toto. She's afraid for her little heart, knees, etc. when she is a "senior". What about Gracie? Is her weight about right? Sounds like they are really active, compared to our "couch potato"!! ;) |
I would not worry about it. If he is not fat, you are not over feeding him. Muscle weighs more than fat and if he is like Oscar, that is where his weight is. Oscar is not a big Yorkie but he weighs 6 pounds. He moves CONSTANTLY! He runs and plays non stop and grabs a bite of food in between jaunts. We free feed him and he eats nowhere near a half cup of food a day...much less. |
Gracie is little bit of a thing at 6 lb. 3 oz. She's four and we've free fed her all along. She never overeats. Avery is a year old and is a wildman, to say the least. Gracie's prim and proper and Avery is ALL boy. They both get plenty of exercise. I guess the vet put the fear in me, but Avery's not at all fat and the vet says he can still feel his ribs. Maybe the vet IS worried about later on.....hmmm. Avery seems to eat on the run....like his bowl of food is a drive-thru. :aimeeyork |
Starsky is 9 lbs 6 oz and he is skinny! He has longer then normal legs and a longer body. He is very active around the house and the back yard. I feed him about 1/2 cup twice a day. Some days he may eat more or less. Plus he gets a small treat twice a day. You may just have a bigger yorkie. Just make sure you can still feel his ribs. I think most of Starsky's weight is in his hind legs. They are sure muscluler from all the running and jumping he does. :doghop: |
