Floppy ears and average size??? When i first got my yorkie on February 24 she weighed 2.2lbs and now 13 days later she is weighing 2.8-2.9lbs....is this growth normal? she doesn't eat very much about 1/2 a cup a day and is only 2 months old today..I tried to check the growth chart for an estimate of what her expected weight will be but there is no category for her. Can someone let me know how much her average weight may be once she is older if right now she is 2 months old and weights 2.8-2.9lbs..(her mom weight about 9-10lbs, and dad 4-5lbs). Also i was reading someone else's post and they mentioned that there yorkie has floppy ears... my yorkie has floppy ears also, i have no intenstion of making them pointy i think she looks soooo cute with floppy ears. are all yorkies born with floppy ears and then it's just up to the individual whether they want them point or floppy? |
Congratulations on your new furbaby! Ginger's floppy-eared too! I think some yorkies have their ears up at a very young age and others are floppy. Even if you don't tape your yorkies ears may stand or may flop. (LOL - that's a lot of help isn't it?) Gingers did both at different times, and she stands them up even now when she's REALLY, REALLY excited. But mostly they are floppy. As far as weight, I have no idea whats normal, but it sounds healthy to me. Good luck, and post some pics! |

All yorkies are born with flopped down ears. Most go up. The breed standard is for the ears to be up. It you want them to go up you can help it along by shaving the ears to take the weight off them. If you don't care or prefer them down then just let them be. They may go up anyway. My female's ears didn't go up until about 12-13 weeks. I didn't shave them then but they weren't very furry anyway. |
:wavey: Hi Welcome to yorkie Talk!! My sami's ears have been floppy since the day I brought him home at 7 weeks, :D and to this day they are still floppy... he is now 15 months old So like you said they are still just as cute :p and i think it makes him still have that cute baby look not all grown up looking. I was told by my vet that sami would be around 7 lbs when full grown, so Im not to sure if guesstamating  would be accurate  sami is close to 6lbs. :yorkietal |
estimating is after all, an estimate! :D When I brought Ginger home I followed all the formulas I could find, asked the vet, etc. Came up with an estimate of 8-9 lbs. My baby girl has topped out at 12.4 lbs (and she's not fat!). If I had estimated 12.4 lbs. The lesson I learned...don't spend $150 on a carrier because it will probably be the right size...only time will truly tell! On a side note, when I brought my shih-tzu home (this was about 18 years ago) at 6 mos. old she weighed just under 6 lbs. With 6 more months of "growing" to go, she never got any bigger than 6.5 sopping wet (and that was when she was a heavy middle aged dog, LOL). Anyway, I tend to babble... good luck with your baby, and enjoy every minute! |
Most Yorkie's ears go up on their own... Some need a little help.... Others never go up... I think floppy ears are cute also - especially on the little puppies. But, I wanted my pup to have erect ears when he became an adult - mainly because "erect ears" would make him look more like a Yorkie. And, his ears did go up to stay when he was about four months old - but life isn't perfect - he has "huge" ears......but oh so cute!!!! Carol Jean |
weight approximation I've heard that the weight the puppy is after 3 mos. times 2 equals its approx. adult weight. Also at this time your dog will be its adult length and height. Our first Yorkie "kelly" has very expressive floppy years, and weighs 11 lbs. our newborn 3 mos. is almost 2lbs. and has very pointy ears. Not all Yorkies look a like. They all have their own personality. |
i bred my 2 yorkies and both of them had ears that stood up but the 2 puppys they had one has 2 floppy ears and the other has one floppy ear and they are both 12 now and i wouldnt change them. :) |
i wouldnt worry about the weight all puppys are different one of mine was a chubby puppy and is now a chubby adult and the other was slim and still is but i fed them both the same. |
