Heartworm prevention... I hadn't had Daisy tested for this when I got her (bad , I know) When she had her seizure problem last week and the vet ran tests, she did test her for it, and it came back negative. I didn't think anything of it, and the vet didn't mention starting preventative. well today a friend of mine came to pick up her daughter from school while I was waiting for my son, and I had Daisy. Her dog (a 75 lb bassett) was in today to get neutered, and they called her and said he had heartworms. She is totally devasted. She didn't know all the info as she had to call the vet back when she got home. Anyway, she said to make sure to get Daisy on some meds. im glad she pointed it out..dont know why it wasn't in the front of my mind. Evn though she's an inside dog, they stil can get bit by mosquitos.. and with us being at the lake all summer, that could be a problem. So anyway...I have to pick up meds for her next week. Was happy to hear its only $20 for a 6 month supply..but of course price isn't much of a factor when it comes to preventing a deadly disease! Anyway..this got alot longer than I wanted. Just be sure if you dont use anything now, think about doing so. And please keep Bruno in your prayers. |
Glad you had Daisy tested! We had Mojo tested for everything when we first got him. He is on interceptor once a month (we get it from the vet) - hope this is a good one (if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know). I have used a believe something called Heartguard (they were chewy chunks) for a Shih-tzu we had once, but the vet recommended Interceptor for Mojo. Poor Bruno!!! We will keep him in our thoughts and prayers! BTW, we had a lab named Bruno years ago when my daughter was a toddler - she named him from the hound dog on Cinderella! Loved that dog and that name! |
Heartworm I have always had my dog on HeartGuard, until I switched to Sentinel, which I thought would be great since it takes care of Fleas and Heart Worm...well...not so much. It makes the Fleas sterile...so that they don't reproduce, but doesn't kill them. So your dog can still swallow one and get tapeworm. I found out about revolution, which is topical and is for both H.W. prevention and Fleas. What a great idea!!! I think I will try that next!!! :aimeeyork |
I have a question....Heartguard is what I have and give to my 15 lb. Bichon. It is one chewable for up to 25 lbs. Myah is only 2 3/4 lbs and I'm concerned about giving her something that is for up to 25lbs. Won't that be a lot of "stuff" for such a little pup? She will be 6 months old tomorrow...the misquito's have just started showing up on Wednesday. Any thoughts? I know I should talk to my vet...but one vet said to put her on it...one said to wait till next year? I'm confused:rolleyes: |
Heartworm test to insure "no heartworms", and then Revolution monthly prevents heartworm. That is what I use on Charlie and he is 11. Warmly, Deborah |
Kammie & Koda take IVERHART PLUS and it's for up to 25lbs. It's a chewable and we were just at the vet yesterday and he said to give them each a whole tablet once a month. Kammie weighs a little over 5lbs and Koda is a little over 6lbs |
