Ideal age for neutering I want to get Hobbs neutered as soon as it is safe in order to prevent the "bad" stuff that boys do, i.e. humping. My vet says that they generally neuter dogs at 6 months. He said that since his testicals have already desended that they would do it at 5 months for me if I wanted them to. Should I go with the vet's "general rule" and wait till Hobbs is 6 months old, or could I go ahead and get him fixed at 5 months??? The vet said that the reason they like to wait until theyare 6 months is because at that age they have almost finished growing, and the bigger they are, the better they can handle the anesthesia. I know several people have gotten their yorkies neutered well before their babies were 6 months old, but I don't want to take any risks asking the vet to do something that he says he doesn't normally do. I would never forgive myself if something happened to my Mr. Hobbs. |

my vet said bunjee can be neutered as early as 4 months but ideally she'd like for him to weigh at least 5 lbs at the time of neutering. bunjee was neutered when he was 4 months and 5 days old. he weighed about 5 lbs at the time. i was nervous but he came in and out of it beautifully. he was a little quiet at first when i picked him up but he wanted to play nearly right away, as if nothing happened. thus far, he's still squats when he pees. he's never lifted a leg for anything. he'll sometimes like to mount and hump/air hump a playmate, but he's been doing that since he was 3 months old. and he's very particular. he doesn't just air hump anyone. haha. so far he's exclusive to 3 dogs, usually those slightly bigger than him, and all three are male. haha. so no change there. |

Well Chachi was neutered at 7 months but if they would have done it at 5 would have done it. I really dont think it makes any difference. |

I think that the vet wants me to wait because Hobbs is so little and at 6 months he will almost be full-grown. Right now, he is 5 days shy of 5 months and he only weighs 2.5 pounds. When he is 6 months he probably will only weigh 3. Just wanted to give this information in case it affected your advice. |

since he's so little, i agree with the vet. the more weight he's got on at time of surgery, the better he'll be able to handle and recover from it quickly. good luck! |
