Weight at 11 Weeks I just brought home my yorkie last friday. My husband and I are still in heated discussions of his name. My husband wants Diesel, but I like Stewart. Anyhow, he is 11 weeks old and at the vet last night weighed 3.7 lbs. is that overweight? He has a ton of hair, but very short little legs. I'm wondering if I should be cutting back his food intake. I give him 1 1/8 cups of iams puppy food, splitting it 2-3 times a day. |
Never cut back on a puppies food specially so young while they're developing, the bones, teeth, body and coat are growing and will continue for two years plus. I keep food available for my puppies 24/7 and don't limit the size of the feeding. I currently feed Royal Canine Puppy food, but considering changing to Biljac, I dont take puppies off puppy food until they are 12 months old. You have the chance of having an 8 lbs plus yorkie full grown. Take his weight at 12 weeks and double it...7 lbs or below is breed standard. Hope this helps |
Here's a question for you - I'm so not having a good thinking day. Tia was 2 lb 10 oz at 13 weeks...I can't for the life of me remember how many oz in a pound to get the estimate. The breeder said 5-6 lb. |
16 ounces = a pound - so thats about right....your tia is almost 3 lbs so that means about 6 pounds as an adult...so, if mine is about 3.5 lbs. he should be 7 -8 lbs as an adult.... |
Thanks so much! :) |
I posted this weight chart on another thread awhile back, it's a chart for toy breed although the site is calling is a chihuahua puppy growth chart you will find the same chart in breeding books simply labled as "toy breed" http://members.cox.net/landrys_kenne...owth_chart.htm |

What's another good puppy food for yorkies.. I certainly dont want to contribute to IAMS if they are mistreating animals. I was just given a puppy pack that included IAMS..I can change the brand, as long as I know what to change him to. |
I've tried Canidae, which works pretty well actually. Oreo's coat became nice ever since he was on it.. and it makes his poop not so foul smelling. Also I've tried Artemis Osopure (it's holistic approach) .. all natural as well, its kind of like canidae. Ginger & Oreo Loved it. Right now The kids are on Innova, which i love A LOT! naturapets.com i think thats the site if you want more information. when they are not puppies anymore i think im going to put them on innova EVO. |
We stopped using Iams too. We've used Royal Canin with Elvis. We started with their baby dog formula until he was old enough to switch to their Yorkshire 28. We went to visit his litter mate a few weeks ago and you could DEFINATELY see the difference between them. Elvis' coat is so shiney and silky. The owner of his litter mate immediately noticed the difference between them too asked me what we fed him. Royal Canin claims to focus on the breed-specific needs of the Yorkie (as well as other dogs they create breed-specific foods for) and Elvis loves the taste. Just a suggestion. Good luck! |
Mocha is 14 weeks and 3 lbs.. I am hoping she'll be about 7 or 8 lbs according to this formula!! That is great.. Thanks Brooke |
Thanks! We purchased the Royal Canin last night, and "Diesel" loved it. The bites are so much smaller. Thanks for the advice. |
How big were your baby's parents? If his weight is close to 1/2 of their full grown weight, he's probably not overweight. Maybe he's just a bigger Yorkie? |
