Cooked bones, not a good idea My boyfriend's mother gave us some small cooked pork bones yesterday for Simba and Pepe. Needless to say the boys loved and and I thought it was safe. Well, my Chi (Pepe) threw up several times tonight, he didn't seem sick or lethargic but kept on throwing the bone up. Poor little guy. He was okay this morning but no more cooked bones for them. I could kick myself but I used to have a German shephard mix who would eat cooked bones just fine so it didn't occcur to me that it would be safe. I feel like a very bad mommy. |
You are not alone. My hubby decided to clean up these good size bones from our osso bucco dish and Tiger just couldn't seem to get enough of it. There was no ligaments or beef on it but he still loved it. He eventually scraped a lot of the bones. A week afterall, he started thorwing up all these white stuff so that was the end of it. We did not know ourselves that their tummy couldn't handle it. He does the same thing with the snack tendons that I buy if he's had plenty of it. So now, I just occassionally give it to him in moderations . . . no more gnawing on it until completely gone . . . The funny thing is he always throws up in the middle of the night  |
Yea I have always heard cooked bones can splinter. |
i haven't had any problems so far with bones... I get my bones from the butcher and ask them to saw me some thick thigh bones (not sure if its called thigh bones or from beef or pork) the one with bone marrow in it Then i mix in some bbq sauce and bake it for about 45 - 1 hour. You should try those...if interested i will try to find the proper name for them type of bones. Lowie and Chowie can spend hours on it and the bones don't splinter. |

I am not suggesting you try this at home (as the disclaimer says on TV) but I have given bones for a very long time. I buy trays of them at the grocery store and they are about 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch thich. I scrape all the marrow out, cook the bones til I can scrape them totally clean. Then scrub with soap, hot water and brush and let the beasties have at them. Every so often I scrub them, and re-cook with bouillon cubes so they have a little flavor. I have never had a problem but I have very specific things I look for.. |
