Anyone know why Maxi would have scabs all over his head? Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone can give some insight. My Maxi has scabs on his neck (under the chin) on his face and his snout. He has been scratching a bit... but I'm not convinced that the scratching is what is causing the scabs because they're in places that he would have some trouble reaching. Maybe, maybe not. Anyway... of course, I'm going to take him to the vet... but wanted to know if anyone had any insight as to what this might be? I use an oatmeal shampoo prescribed by the vet. I thought maybe it was because I wasn't rinsing him good enough... but I took him to a groomer this weekend and he got a cut and a good rinse... but there seem to be more scabs appearing. :( |
My dog has these and he has allergies. The vet also found that he had mites and it was aggrivating his allergies. |
Thanks for the info. Mites? Are those found in the ears? Or can they be found in other places. He got his ears checked a couple of weeks ago and they were clear of mites although he was scratching them at the time. The vet mentioned he might have allergies. How do you treat his allergies or even find out what he is allergic to? I should add that...I haven't changed his diet. He eats Wellness Puppy wet food and O&M Holistic Puppy Pride Kibble. He gets the meat rolls, Prairie-something freez dried food mixed in occassionally and for snacks... the nutro treats. |
Mites are on the body. The way my vet explained it to me is that all dogs have them but when their immune system gets down they can multiply and thats when there is a problem. They can test for allergies. There are common things that dogs are allergic to. It depends on the severity on how they will treat it. My dogs are pretty severe and he takes prednisone its a steriod. |

What are the shape of these scabs? Are they round? Could be ringworm! If so, it's not that big of a deal - medicated ointment and baths with a special shampoo will get rid of it if that's what it is. We got two kittens from the animal shelter last Spring and didn't realize they had ringworm until at least a month later. Well, Tatum (our Yorkie) and Stormie (our Aust. Shepherd) ended up with a couple spots. Boy that was fun! (not!) We had to bathe both kittens and both dogs every 3 days for weeks with this special shampoo. It does kinda sound more like an allergy problem though if he was scratching his ears. I've never seen the mites that the others have suggested so I'm not sure about those but ringworm could be a possibility too. Good luck! |
Charlie had the same thing late last summer and early fall. I did a little research about allergies and food and discovered that many Yorkies are allergic to the corn in their dry food. Sure enough, I checked the Royal Canin he was eating - and loved - and discovered that corn is one of the fillers in it. I switched him to Innova Evo and he cleared up within a couple of weeks. I'm now feeding him Chicken Soup, which he likes better, and haven't had any problems. Good luck. |
Thanks Guys. It's dry skin. Apparently, I've been bathing him too much and not allowing for his natural oils to keep him moistureized. Since I recently cut all of his hair off (puppy cut)... it will be easier to bathe him less since his urine won't be clinging to his hair. He is on meds to relieve the itching and an oil supplement. So glad it isn't mites or ringworm! Thanks a bunch! :) |
Hi all, Have not posted in ages. My Little Bits has been very ill. Cancer (adeno carcinoma). Which is now causing heart failure. I am posting now, because she has developed these scabs around her neck area. I wondered at first if it was from her flea treatment, but now thinking perhaps because the immune system is so compromised? They don't seem to bother her much, but I would like opinions? Her food is all over the place,as she has been so picky with tummy troubles. Mostly nutro adult lamb. I don't want her in any more distress. it is so difficult to see her go through this.....Thanks. |

It's prob either a staph infection (pyoderma) or some kind of bug - ie mites or fleas. Either way, a vet has to look at a swab of the irritated areas under scope to see if there bacterial overgrowth or something else. Not fleas It s not fleas, I have her on comfortis all year, except in summer, when I give frontline to avoid ticks. I know what fleas look like I showed the vet, & he said just ignore it, but I think that is because he feels her time is so short...I did bathe her in oatmeal shampoo yesterday, and it did get rid of many of them. I agree it may be an allergy to food or meds, but, I did want your opinions. Thanks. |
