Pluck Ear Hairs I am sure many of you know this already but my vet told me I have to pluck my yorkies inner hairs in his ears. You see he was scratching his ears so bad I thought he had mites, but it was in fact wax build up. The wax built up around all the hair in his ears. So the vet plucked all his hairs inside his ears and cleaned them really well. Now he is much better. He gave me some ear drops and it is helping alot. I am a first time yorkie owner so I had no idea you had to pluck those hairs. So I figured I would post this to let other first timers know too. |
You certainly do need to pluck the hair from the ears. I use the ear powder which makes it allot easier to pluck then the clearner after that is done. I do this on a monthly basis. |
I had a question for the ones that do this.... does it hurt the pups? I had my vet do it when Roxy was about 3 months old and she cried soooo bad. Part of her ear was bleeding a little. I know I should be doing it but gosh I dont have the heart to do that to her again. It was so hard me to watch. Then he kept digging wax so he could check her ears. She kept crying. I finally said thats enough, its not important to look at her ears  Is it harmful to her if its not done? Her ears havent ever bothered her yet. |
That's another debate. Pluck or not to Pluck? Some vets say to leave the hair. IMO I remove the hair. Yorkies are not wild dogs, they were bred by man as so many other breeds. But if the plucking of the hair is done gently there should be no bleeding or rawness. And you don't have to get every single hair. Believe or not my yorkies like it. I pluck a little bit hair at a time. Using ear powder does help. Good Luck :animal36 |
Thanks for the reply. My vet did just about all the hair at one time, he wrapped them in these scissors looking things. It lokked terrible and I felt terrible. |

Usually the only reason they cry is because they don;t like being held down or because part of the ear gets pinched. My groomer tells me to pull out as much as you can (small amounts at a time) w/ your fingers, then with a really good light, and a steady hand she pulls the rest out with a pair of hemostats. you might need someone else to hold the dog while you do it. She told me that it is very rare that she has a dog object to this. Plus the hair in the ears helps to trap dirt and build up in the ears. i rarely (almost never) have to clean out my dogs ears when the hair is out. Also, 3 out of 4 of my dogs have very little and slow regrowth of the hair once it is plucked. My male on the other hand grows hair like a sasquatch!!!! |

It was sad seeing him get it plucked but after that he hasn't scratched again. Where do you buy that powder? |

I am curious.... I bathe my little one every 6-7 days. I use a Q-tip amd very carefully clean her ears. I have noticed that there is alot of build up and its very much, always. After 3-4 Q-tips its very clean! My question is, Does the plucking hurt? How can I go about pulling her hair inside?? Will Twizers work? |

Now I am curious-- Why do you bath this little one so often ? |
I was told that once a week is good for her... Being a new Yorkie owner I had no idea, so I asked the vet how often to bathe her and he said every 6-7 days is a healthy time period to give her a bath. But... if there is anyone out there that can answer my original question I would greatly appreciate it! :) |

Will the powder dissolve itself? Also, how often would you recommnd doing this? I am very curious because she is always scratching herself and she looks like she is in so much disomfort... thats why I decided going in there with Q-tips, but I am always afraid becuase she is soo tiny and I never want to go to far inside... :( Thank you soo much for your suggestion!!!! |
