Wheezing, Coughing, Gagging After Runs.. Worried..
 

Well, Harley is kinda worrying me. When he gets outside to play with Zeus he GOES. I mean, he's a blur. And he tears around the yard back and forth back and forth back and forth until he can't breathe. When he finally comes to a halt, usually only bc I force him to take a break, he wheezes, coughs and sometimes gags.. He does all of this with his head bent low as if he's going to vomit. (which has never happend) And I know the dangers of collapsed trachea are of course a chance.. but what do you guys think? I've tested him.. like when he comes to me I'll rub his throat a little with my finger and sometimes he'll gag etc.. with very little pressure at all. Also, when I lay him on his back to rub his belly/brush his hair/trim his nails he will struggle with his head and attempt to lift it up to look at me (I'm sitting on the floor legs together and he's laying on his back cradled between them with his head towards my feet) and everytime he does this he starts a weird noise and begins sneezing or gagging.. And I'm guessing that this is caused by his straining to lift his head to see me and basically squishes his throat.. :(

I'm a worried momma right now.. this doesn't happen every day and even if it's not serious right now it may be in the future.. So I figured I would ask the people I know who have the best experience.. Please give any information.. Thanks.

How old is he? I would ask the vet to check for collapsed trachea. It usually doesn't show up until their around 5 years old but can start as a puppy. It's important to never use a collar and to keep his weight down. Good luck!

It may be something simple like bronchitis or an upper respitory infection. He sounds very similar to what Lily was doing. The vet gave her an antibiotic and she is all better. :)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Benji tends to do the same thing - he snorts a lot when he plays with his favourite toy "Ms. Blue". I think that this is something he will grow out of. He will eventually learn to slow down and take a breath. He sometimes gets so excited and eats his food too much and gags but has never thrown up. However, if you are worried I would mention this concern to your vet the next time you visit but, over time you will also learn a lot more about their little tendencies and won't worry so much about all of their silly noises. I've always used a harness on him bc he pulls like a husky and weak trachea or not he would kill himself lol He's about 11 months and has been doing it for a long time now. I'm going to ask my vet about it. (I just recently found a new and better one.. :))

not too long ago Mojo gave me the biggest scare, i woke up at 4 in the morning with him making weird noises, turns out he was chocking and couldn'y breathe...nex day the vet found he has an slight elongated soft palate, that also explains his gagging (which is not related with anything else with his trachea)

Hurfing
 

We had this with Toby and the Vet thought he had bronchitis.

We then got a book on Yorkies and there was a section on 'Hurfing'. It's when the trachea goes into spasm, usually after barking and getting excited and it causes them to cough and sneeze backwards at the same time. The first time we heard we thought he choking to death. The book recommended rubbing the dog's throat to ease the spasm or if it's really bad, to gently put your finger down the dog's throat to spark the gag reflex which stops the spasm.

Since stopping Toby from going in my daughter's smokey room he doesn't do it as much now.
