Shall I cut his milk? Also is this normal..... Hi all! I got my yorkie alfie on sat and the owner i got him from told me that he likes to drink lots of milk. Alfie is 5 years old. My mum was horrified when i told her this and told me to stop giving it to him. I have given him lots of water and he drinks it with no problems. however, since he loves milk so much i have been giving him a tiny bowl of it once a day. he loves it so much and he drinks it all in one go. is this bad? should i just cut it out completely? Also, he seems to Poo (sorry) a couple of times everytime he goes out and he goes out 2-3 times a day. is this normal? i thought he would only go once a day but he seems to be going lots. Thanks for all your help. I cant wait til I learn lots from you to be able to help people too. Val |
If his previous owner gave him milk daily with no problems etc,I think stopping now would be sad for him.Having said that, him pooping 3 times a day may be due to the milk,so maybe you can just give him half a bowl a day instead of what he is drinking now. I know that my two only poop once a day and they are 2years old so 3 times a day some seem like alot for an adult. As long as its not diarrea though,I guess its ok:rolleyes: |
thank you for that. I did think that the pooing may be cos i changed his food. the last owner was very fussy with what she gave him and feed him human food such as rice and tuna. I put him straight on to dry dog food which he loves now but do you think that could also be a factor? maybe i should have introduced it gradually to him? I think i will give him even less milk, perhaps once every couple of days. thanks again for responding. |
Since your little one is 5 and has been drinking milk I don't think that is a problem but when you change dog foods you should always gradually introduce the new food. I would guess your little one is reacting to the sudden change in food more than the milk. Is it okay to give my dog milk? Answer This is a very good question! Few dog owners know that most dogs tend to be lactose intolerant. This means that they lack the enzyme beta lactamase, which allows the digestive system to break down the kind of sugar contained in milk. Dogs that lack this enzyme end up with a lot of undigested sugar in their intestinal tract, which creates a wonderful breeding environment for bacteria. When a lot of bacteria grows in the intestinal tract it can irritate the stomach and intestine and cause vomiting and diarrhea. These are the same problems that occur in lactose-intolerant people. That being said, while many dogs are lactose intolerant, some are not. Some dogs love the taste of milk and other dairy products and won't have any stomach or intestinal problems when they get some as a treat. The bottom line is, it may be okay to give your dog a small amount of milk if it doesn't cause her any vomiting, diarrhea, or other discomfort. Check with your veterinarian first to be sure it won't cause your pooch any health problems or interfere with his diet. |
thank you so much for that, that is so helpful. |
My vet said that milk bothers some dogs and cats. But - if it doesn't bother them - go ahead and let them have it...no problem! **I bought Lactose-free milk for my cat. He couldn't tolerate milk - it gave him diarrhea. But, he loved it, and when he became old and sick, I discovered that he could drink lactose-free milk. It was about all he could keep down the last few months of his life. Sad.... Carol Jean |
