Teeth Cleaning As many of you know, Muffie went to the Vet last night to have her teeth cleaned this morning. Just a reminder, Muffie is 10-1/2 years old and we never brushed her teeth for all these years I never knew we were supposed to be brushing her teeth until we got Missy about 2 months ago & I joined Yorkie Talk. That's where I learned that we SHOULD have been brushing Muffie's teeth all these years. Poor Muffie, had to get SIX TEETH PULLED. I thought of four that probably needed to come out but it was a total of six. She still has a few more than are lose!*!*! She seems to be doing pretty good. She's up and walking around and barking to get out in the kitchen as Missy is eating her supper! She got a pain shot this morning and we are to start giving her pain meds tomorrow morning along with antibiotics. Now, for the fun part! Keeping Missy and Muffie away from each other for about a day or so just to help protect Muffie's sore mouth! Missy will be all over Muffie!*!*!*! Let this be a reminder to all of you as to what happens when you don't brush your dogs teeth. |
Poor baby!! I am dreading this day with Daisy..as she needs to have a few teeth pulled as well! She's almost 7, and her "breeder" didn't do a damn thing to her teeth as far as brushing, so they are very bad. I hope your baby feels better real soon!!! |

You might want to start brushing her teeth NOW and don't wait any longer. Try to save what teeth you can for now. Get her in ASAP for a teeth cleaning. Muffie is 10-1/2 years old and this is the 1st time we've ever had it done. We didn't know we were supposed to be doing that either. We definitely will be brushing Missy's teeth. Listen up everyone! This is a lesson to be learned for those that don't brush your dog's teeth and don't get them cleaned either. We have no one to blame but ourself! |
Ive had her almost 3 months. I just switched vets, and got a MUCH cheaper estimate for her dental work, but still, I need to save up for it. Can't afford the whole thing at once! I asked the vet about brushing now anyway..she said I could to get her use to it, but they are too far damaged to actualy do any good until she has a professional cleaning and some pulled. |

Maybe she doesn't actually "feel" anything yet because of all the numbing effects, etc from the teeth cleaning and teeth pulling procedures. She's in the kitchen barking for Tom to give her something to eat but she can't have anything until tomorrow morning. She will definitely be hungry as she had to fast from 6 p.m. last night and now again till tomorrow morning. I was just out in the kitchen grinding up dry kibbles enough for a week's worth for her to eat. They told us to do that and mix enough water with it to make a thick paste. It'll be a long time before tomorrow gets here so she can eat. She can only have water until then. |
Aww, poor little girl. Thank you for the reminder. Muffie must be so hungry. Amy, I agreed start brushing her teeth so she gets use to it. I hope the vet allow you to pay in installments so Daisy can have her teeth clean ASAP. |
I was told that Yorkies are prone to bad teeth....But so far so good on our end. I brush Mojos teeth weekly. Sometimes I forget and sometimes I do it more than once a week. I have bad teeth and would hate for him to go through all I have to go through! |

Could someone tell me exactly what you do to brush their teeth and what you use etc etc..Thanks |
Pat, so glad she's home and doing well. Crystal lost 9 because of the growth being on her gum and pushing her teeth loose. I was so upset and said "How will she eat her carrots" and she did in no time. Pat, there is something on the "dogs 8 years and older you should see" I've been thinking of Muffie all day. |
Hope this helps Quote:
It usually comes with a tooth brush but I have found them too large for a yorkie mouth. They also sell one that is rubber you slip on your finger, kinda like the ruber thingy that you use to flip the pages of a book, but this one has a tiny raised rough spot. That works the best for me but there may be better ideas out there. |

What was it in particular that I should see in the thread "dogs 8 years and older"? I'm getting a stye on my good eye. It's from being on this darn computer. I get on and can't get off!*! LOL Can you just put it in quotes for me in a reply? Thanks loads. |
Oh poor Muffie! So sorry Muffie had to have teeth pulled, poor girl! I think by the time my Jasper was 12 he had about 5 teeth left, but it never stopped him from eating his dinner, his favorite time in his day! Hope Muffie's poor mouth feel better soon! :p |

Pat and poor little Muffin. Don't you worry little Muffin, many a toothless Yorkie still eats kibble and not even ground up. They just suck them little suckers up. In fact if your mom doesn't want to feed you kibble anymore you don't have to eat it as one of the primary reasons for kibble is to crunch your food so if you are nice maybe she will just feed you wet. heehee...Oh that's right your sister is around and she needs to still eat kibble, Okay..Okay. Seriously Pat, many a rescue has come through and we have had to pull many teeth even a 3 years old dog. They were rotten. Most of them were back to eating a little food by that evening and they were not on pain meds. If fact some of them were so thrilled to have the hurting teeth gone they were dancing a jig. I am so glad you got Muffin in as teeth decay/rot will kill a Yorkie. It sends poison into their system and we had to have one Yorkie put down because it had enlarged her heart so much she could barely breath and it was all due to bad teeth. It was very sad. I always laugh at some of the little old Yorkie's their tongues are hanging out because they do not have any teeth left but they still jump into their food without a problem. For everyone reading this remember...February is National Dental Month for dogs and most vets will give a discount rate for cleaning their teeth... and they sure feel better after it is done. :) |
