Sleeping Through The Night 1 Attachment(s) Hi to all Yorkie Parents: I am the new parent of an adorable happy and peaceful 15 week old yorkie. He is a dream! He is housebroken and responds well to commands. He wakes up at about 12:30 a.m and 4:00 a.m. Being a mom of two children, I know that this is to be expected for some time since he is a baby. Does anyone know how long it should take before :aimeeyork he begins to sleep through the night? Thanks in advance! Cometsmom |
Wake-up times? When you say he wakes up in the middle of the night, is it to go potty? Or he just wakes up to play etc.? If it is to go potty you have control of that by setting his schedule and cutting off his water intake. In general they are light sleepers, unless I have completely exercised mine, anything wakes him up. He is 1 yr. and going on 3 months and he normally will go potty @ 10:30-11:00 pm. and sleep until 7 am., but for example last night my husband fell asleep and took him out @ 9:00 pm. instead he woke me up @ 4 am. and then I took him again for his regular long walk @ 7 am. That was an example of my point. In general they nap so much when they're puppies, I believe you have to train them and make all things clear. I speak to mine alot, a woman told me that they have the capacity to learn up to 200 words? Good Luck! :D |
Congrats on ur new baby and welcome to this forum, i hope u will enjoy ur stay as we all do ... i think each puppy is different with potty training and sleeping through the night, but i would say a few weeks ... i guess i really am very lucky with mine, since the first night she never let a peep... i keep her potty right there with her during the night incase she needs it, i use a real baby campingbed that has netting on the sides and is big enough for her to sleep on one side and the pee pad on the other end and theres no way she can get out and wonder off during the night :) hoeray to campingbeds :D |

Comet definitely wakes up to poop, and then goes right back into his crate to sleep. I am skeptical about the wee-wee pad thing, only because he is doing so well with going outside to poop. I have been feeding him later on in the day, so maybe this has something to do with him getting up in the night? I try to give him his last meal of the day no later than 5:00 pm. and provide fresh water only during his scheduled feeding times. What am I doing wrong? |

I am sometimes tempted to put a wee-wee pad in his sleeping quarters, but he is so well trained outdoors now, that I am afraid to break the cycle. I work through the day and arrive home at about 4:00 pm, so I imagine that his activity level is not peaked until we arrive at home. He gets plenty of excercise with our 2 kids when they get home from school and we are pretty active on weekends. We are looking into a dog walker for mid -afternoons on weekdays, in hopes that he will be pretty tired by bed time. What are your thoughts? Sincerely, Cometsmom |
Stomper is now 15 weeks old - he goes to bed at 9 PM and wakes up every morning between 5:45 - 6:15 AM. Even if he goes to bed later, he still gets up between 5:45 - 6:15 AM! Once he is up, he will NOT go back to sleep. He cries and barks - wants to play! I've tried to put him back in the crate, but he cries and barks - can't sleep so I get up. I've even tried NO! He used to get up 3 times a night. I started to ignore a few of the cries/barks because I thought he was doing it for attention. I suggest getting some ear plugs and ignoring him at least one of the times during the night. If you don't feed him after 5 PM, he shouldn't need to get up that much. It is hard to ignore them, but try it for at least 5 nights. Note: Stomper would force himself to pee all 3 times, but it was not much pee. That is how I knew he didn't really need to get up! From what I understand, it typically takes puppies between 14-16 weeks to hold it through the night. Give it a little more time. He is 15 weeks and should not be getting up 3 times a night. Unless...is he tiny? My yorkie is already 6 pounds and 6 ounces so he should be able to hold it! |

Thanks Klogen and Stomper for the good advice! Comet is only about 3 1/2 to 4 pounds and poops or pees each time he goes out. I will look forward to the next two weeks as you suggest. My instincts tell me that it will take a couple more weeks for him to begin sleeping longer! |
Comet and MOM Weclome to YT. Give him time he still young, soon he will sleep the nite. Good luck and welcome. :Puppy: |
