Low Protein foods for poss Liver Shunt Cali may have Liver Shunt her Bile Acid came back high (90) I am trying to find low protein foods to give her until she is positively diagnosed. She is an extremely picky eater, if she likes something she will eat it otherwise she won't. She has been on a hamburger and rice diet for a few days and she picks out every piece of rice and only eats the hamburger. I had been boining it put today she wouldn't eat at all until tonight when I fried some and drained it real well, then she ate it all up. I am at a loss on what to feed her until she has further testing. Alos she hasn't pooped since Wednesday night after She came home form the Er vet. She had diarhhea and is on 2 meds. How long can they go without pooping? Sorry this is so long but I am so frustrated and upset. Everytime Cali lays down I'm afraid she's sick. |
Hi Patti Check out WalthamUsa.com they have a rx diet called Renal LP reccomendedfor small and medium breeds. As you can tell LP means low protien. I would ask your vet to order it now, It will help tremendously. :) |
Cali won't eat most dog foods, I will try that but I was wondering if there was something I can make for her that is low in protein. |
I believe they make a can renal lp. but in the meantime ,you might want to try veggies, peas, carrots, green beans. But if she has a shunt and you choose to manage it with her diet you have to work on getting to eat what is best for . example diabetics have to also watch what they eat. Remember to check protein levels in treats also. |
Is Cali a tiny yorkie? |
Cali was 1 lb at 10 weeks but at 7 months she is 4lbs 1 ounce so I think she will be 4.5-5 lbs full grown. She has gained weight every week. She is fine boned. She was from 5lb parents but was the smallest in the litter. The problem I have is if she doesn't like something she won't at it and I can't let her go without food because she goes hypoglycemic. I will try the lp dog food and mix it with her hamburger at first. Hopefully as I get more test done the vet can guide me. Thanks |
Good luck and you and Cali will be in our prayers. If you need anything else let me know. |
Sorry, I know what you are going through. Lil Bear has a liver shunt which is treated by low protein food..we keep her on about a 12% protein food. She's not fond of it but will eat it. We leave it out for her all day with plenty of water and then for dinner we give her some wet food usually half a ceasr. She has eaten walthum which she is eating right now, the vet carries royal canin LP, we haven't opened it up yet but the bag seems to intrest her. We have to watch treats too and keep them protein real low. Lil Bear does eat beets, which I have read can help with the liver. |
