What's up with the eyes? I've been a new Yorkie owner for 1 month now and I'm puzzled about her eyes. They are constantly watery, but even worse, it makes her entire face smell. I asked the vet about this and he said something about it being common for very small dogs (she only weighs 1 lb 9 oz) to have eyeballs bigger than their sockets and that can cause the teary eyes. Have any of you ever heard of such a thing? I read in another thread about giving them distilled water to help dry up the eyes and I'm definitely going to try that! Thank you to the person who posted that advice. I hope that will help with the icky smell. - Misty |
this is something we all deal with to some extent. Taking care of it is part of the daily grooming. Take a damp washcloth with warm water and clean off all the eye-goo every day, and them comb out the face. It's really gross if you don't keep up with this, so do it every day and it will only take a few minutes. |
My girl had very drippy eyes when I first got her. Not just damp but actually looked like she had been crying all the time. My vet said it is common for little dogs (she was 1 lb 8 oz when I got her and only 6 weeks old) to have tear duct issues and it would probably resolve itself in time. About a month later we noticed that her eyes were not drippy anymore. She still gets gunky but her fur is not wet from it like when she was little. |
I've been told that the drippy/staining/stinky eyes can be caused by whatever food you're feeding.. Not sure if that's the cause but it's always good to check |
I am so glad someone brought this up! When I first got Lola the vet said it just may be immature tear ducts...well she is 14 weeks old and I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with her eyes...hers don't smell but they do drip enough to make you think she is crying sometimes. |
I read in a thread here a few days ago some folks were drizzling olive oil on their pups food to help their eyes. People were saying that this really works and is good for keeping their coat shiny as well. Anyone else read this thread? |
