For all you self groomers What kind of grooming supplies do you have and recommend? After the mishap with Jolene, I am going to try to do some of her grooming myself, but really need some recommendations on products to buy. Thanks |
Hi Jen, I've been grooming my own Yorkies for over 30 years now. I've probably tried every thing out there. I have 10 Yorkies now. I bath them every week. The products I use depends on the coat type. I like the Vellus products and the Coat Handlers products. Sometimes I'll even use baby shampoo. When I wrap the Vellus cream works best. I just tried a conditioner from Eqyss, you don't have to rinse shampoo out before using conditioner. So far it works good on the silky coats. I like the fact that I only have to rinse once. I also will lightly spray with mink oil on the ends, just to help with breakage. I spend 2 days a week just bathing & grooming my dogs. I will say those are my favorite days of the week. :yorkiesar |
I have Andis clippers & scissors for trimming. I use baby shampoo (tearless) on his face around his eyes and ears I use Pet Silk (http://www.petsilk.com/) shampoo & conditioner. I use Diamond Eye and a cotton swab for his tear stains/crusties, but he doesn't have much of those anymore since we switched him off of Eukanuba and Nutro. and I use Q-tips for his ears |

Jan, I am currently using CC systems products and like them better than anything I have found so far. My options are limited unless I use the net. In the past I have used Les Poochs but it made her itchy. Currently she is in a puppy cut and I'd like her to grow long, but we've been going through some hair changes. She had a litter of pups before I got her and her hair was really dry, then it started to darken drastically after the pus were weaned and I got her. I also changed her food to a high protein, high fat and no byproducts. She eats very healthy now. Hair and skin is in great condition now, so hopefully it will grow. What kind of clippers, scissors, thinners, etc. do you use? Thanks so much for all advice |
quick question about the Eukanuba food effecting crusties and eye tears adn stains. I feed my angel Eukanuba and she has those problems and hates getting her eyes and around her eyes cleaned. |

I love the CC rat tail comb. I think it was alittle to much $$,but it's wonderful. Sounds like you're on the right track. Am I the only one that spends way more$$$$$ on my Yorkies grooming supplies, than my own? I've never washed my hair with $20.00+ shampoo.LOL |

JAN.....Can you PLEASE look at my avatar or photo album and offer any advise about Chanels Coat ...since you've groomed for 30 years I'd love to hear your opinion on any shampoo & Conditioner that may work on her long hair - she is cottony and getting harder to keep up with... Presently I use .... CC Systems Plush Puppy Reviva Coat Liquid Silk Thank you - and carolina yorkie...didn't mean to hijack your thread ! :) |
Hi Villett, I looked at your pix but couldn't tellmuch about coats. You have darling kids. Love the smile :) I have 2 girls with cottony coats. I keep them in a puppy cut. I use Coat Handlers 5 to 1 shampoo & CC final solution rinse(don't care for that name). I have found thru the years that a cottony coat stays cleaner than a silk, but instead of growing down it tends to grow outward, kindda like an afro. I've also notices that dogs with red eyes tend to have a cottony coat & dogs w/green eyes have silky( using flashlight in dark room). Also a silky coat is cool to the touch as opposed to the warmer feel of cottony coat. Hope I answered your questions. If not, let me know. :yorkiesar |
Hi - I've been grooming Sabrina myself except for nails for 10 years. I use a mustache trimmer on ears, nose, eyes, hindquarters and face, and Boots and barkley clippers on the rest. I'd be afraid to use any sissors etc. I bath in Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo unless they have fleas (happens!) and use baby hair detangler for knots and tangles. Haven't had skin problems or scrapes/cuts. I have the Chris Christenson ice on ice and white on white and I love it - but use it about every third time to bring out highlights. I like it, but it's harder to use and you can't get it near the eyes. |

I tried Pure Paws and didn't like it at all....and you are so right about the AFRO look lol ! I do use a dematting comb on Chanel to thin her out and it really helps...but I'd love to see her hair lay a little flatter.... and her eyes DO glow Red - I think the saying about the flash reflection is right on because Cheri who has a silky coat has a green reflection in pictures....it's really strange but holds true :) Thanks for the quick reply ! |
Oh, I forgot to tell you, I do use thinning shears on them. :yorkiesar |
Helps the coat lay a little flatter. :yeahthat: |
Never did that!! Quote:
I use Coat Handler (this shampoo was made by a famous yorkie owner and I also use Vellus an Ohio product that I really love when it comes to the hardware, I like All Systems |
