What is the recommended daily allownace for puppy? We have a 12 week old yorkie, How much should we be feeding him a day? i noticed most of the puippy food comes in 85 gram size packs. Should he just be having one of these a day and nothing else? |
Free feeding is recommended for puppies, meaning keep a full bowl out all day. Yorkie puppies are high energy pups, they burn a lot of calories so food should be available when they need it. Don't worry about over feeding a puppy. |

Personally, I discourage free feeding dogs. It is not a great habit to get into. Once you start certain things they are difficult to undo. Your puppy should have a set amount of food and there should be no guessing how much he has eaten. You also should have set times for him to eat. Not only for health reasons, but they love consistency. A normal puppy at 12 weeks of age should not have to be fed constantly. This link covers a lot of the issues with free feeding: https://www.petmd.com/blogs/nutritio...ost_dogs-12694 Be sure you are feeding him puppy food! I noted you did say that. :) I am just reinforcing. I have a rule of thumb with kibble with average size yorkies....about 1/4 cup twice/day. But again, I would speak with the vet. |

I am happy it worked for you; but, I encourage anyone reading this thread to read the link I posted about free feeding. Each of us does what is best for our pups and I am not saying anyone is wrong to do it. I just comes with the risk of many issues. |

All the years you are on YT and now you put up that link. Why didn't you put that link up the very first time a YT member suggested / recommended free feeding puppies? Read my reply, "Free feeding is recommended for puppies". I never wrote I free feed. lovetodream88 (Taylor) dogs are well over one year old and she still free feeds and recommends free feeding "puppies". |

If you PERSONALLY didn't do it....pardon me for misreading your post. You DID highly recommend it and it is NOT a highly recommended thing to do as you posted above. You don't get to dictate to me what I post and/or when I post it. I help out when I can and people can choose to use what I say or leave it behind. Matters not to me. |

Don't let the "flack" bother you. It happens on all forums. :) Just the way of the internet. There is a TON of great information on this forum!!! When you get time, please share pics of your puppy! We love seeing new pups! |

If you are using a computer there is a free program that I use. See below. Resize Photos Online - The Free and Easy Way to Shrink Photos Resize Photos Online - The Free and Easy Way to Shrink Photos and Compress Jpeg Pictures Select resize photos top left side Select step 1 Browse Select your photo double click on it Select step 2 (resize options) For YT width I use 600 just change the 8 to 6 Quality I use 65, click and hold down the box, slide to the left until you come to 65 Click upload and resize photo If photo is sideways, above pics of sunflowers look for ROTATE and click it, click on 90CW until photo is correct then Click on Apply settings & generate photo Select Download image Window opens shows photo asks to Open with or save file (I always choose open with, after I send my photo then I select where I want to save it) This is an easy and simple resizing program |

It was brought up that I free feed. I want to add a few notes about this. None of my dogs scarf food down and all pick at food and are not over weight. I am disabled so I am home with them just about every single day 24/7 and because of where their food is and how open our house is I can see who is eating when and what. I do pick it up before bedtime so we don't have mice or bugs or anything like that in the food. Obviously this is dry food because you can not leave wet out all day. Free feeding doesn't work with every dog obviously if they eat their food fast and eat everything as well as have weight issues it certainly isn't good for them. With one dog you can still measure it out and tell what they are eating. I work very hard training my dogs and jumping on training if I start to see any issues arise and my dogs have no food aggression what so ever but some do which would be another reason not to free feed. I think you have to take everything into consideration and make decisions based on that dog. |
