Raw Bones Anyone? Does anyone here give their Yorkie raw bones? If so, what kind? I used to give my Husky raw turkey necks and he was in heaven! I know that Joey would love them also, but I'm scared to try it. By the way, he's a 10-pounder, not a delicate tiny. [I know that this is a controversial topic. If I had my way, we'd limit conversation on this thread to which raw bones people have fed their Yorkies and not get into the pros and cons!] Thanks for your help! |

Bones are fine as long as they are not cooked! I have given mine raw chicken wings and they loved them!! I only do it once in a blue moon - I have mentioned this before when talking about the raw diet in general - the raw part just makes me a little nuts with their hair and cross contamination! So when I have given them it's usually in a confined area and usually followed by a bath. Hey.... I just thought of something I gues I could use it as a bathtime ritual thing and do it more often just do it before I was going to bathe them anyway...I know I am weird! :D It's just with kids around too I don't want any of us humans getting salmanella(sp?). How did you do it with your other dog and turkey necks? |
I have friends who feed raw and they give them wings. They said that the necks have funny shaped bones and can cause broken teeth. |

If you fed them to your husky and nobody got sick I wouldn't worry about it. I know that lots and lots and more people everyday feed raw and don't suffer any illnesses themselves, I am just a little more paranoid - mostly because I have my yorkies in long coats and I worry about it in their hair. I can't remember who but someone on here feeds a raw food now and it comes in medallions so their isn't such a problem because it can be broken it bite size pieces - I haven't been able to find it around here though. :( |

Loki did not chew on the raw bone that I got him once. He IS a chewer, but he likes to chew things he can destroy, like he will chew on a flexible nylabone for HOURS but ignore the same flavor durable nylabone. He loves booda cornstarch bones but I worry too much about - his poop gets full of little chunks of it, which means he is not digesting it. Bully sticks ROCK but caused him to get diarrhea. Compressed rawhide too, he loved it but it made him sick. I only gave him a greenie once and he ate it in larger pieces and had green poop so we decided against those too. Sorry I'm not much help. What else is out there? |

I feed raw, and I feed marrow bones (soup bones) as treats, VERY nutritious! And turbie LOOOVES them. I get the smaller kind, that are probably 3 inches in diameter max. Like others mentioned, chicken wings. An occasional raw bone for dogs who eat kibble can help scrape that tarter build up off! Just no weight bearing bones, or really thick bones like leg bones as they can break teeth. |
I was also told to never give dogs (especially our little babies) bones (any kind, any way). I heard that they can all splinter (even steak bones) which can cause big promblems (I know, we have all heard that from chicken bones, but other bones too). Pork chops bones are even worse....our babies can NOT have pork!! I would stick to other treats....not rawhide bones though! That is my opinion!!!! - course, we just paid a high vet bill and had over a week of stress and sleepless nights from bones/chewies!!! Momma's know best though.......and again "what works for one, but not for another". |

First Yorkie you might want to check this website out. There is alot of information on the net about raw/barf diets. I do worry more about little ones as their system can't handle as much as a large dog.
