breathe Hi, not even sure how to explain what my puppy is doing, she is 1.6kg and 6 months old, we have had continuous problems with her stomach and have tried different food and feeding options. For the last 2 weeks she has had terrible smelling breathe, but is also doing funny things with her mouth, it almost looks like she has a very dry mouth because she is forever licking and her tongue is in and out of her mouth all the time but also looks like she has something in her mouth and gags sometimes but doesn't vomit, doing weird mouth things. generally she is very happy though, active and on the go. Never been a great eater. her breathe is not tooth related, but it is terrible almost like she has eaten from a rotten dustbin.. have dewormed. |
That thing she's doing with her mouth is a sign of indigestion. What does your vet say about it ? She may need some Rx food, could be food allergies. |
What are you feeding her? What you are describing sounds like nausea. |
We have tried various diet changes, she is very fussy. also done deworming, and diomec plus and nausea tabs |
would nausea cause such bad breathe? also its been 2 weeks? |
It is best to find one food that she likes and stick with it. They don't often do well with constant food changes.. Has blood work been done? |
because she hardly eats, I have given her a very mixed diet. she does not like dry dog food...have given her chicken livers which she loves...and mince and chicken all plain cooked with no spices etc. I realise this could be the issue but then worry that she is not eating. have been giving her royal cannin Yorkie puppy food as a dry option. |

Again, has blood work been done? |
There are several possible causes of bad breath in a pup that age, and ALL of them require a visit to your vet for examination and evaluation. Teething issues: Six months is about the age when your pup will get her adult teeth. If she has retained baby teeth (very, very common in yorkies!) the adult teeth may be trying to erupt through a mouth full of baby teeth, causing pain and infection. Digestive issues: It honestly doesn’t sound as though you’re feeding an appropriate diet. I understand the difficulty of having a picky eater ... you just want her to eat SOMETHING. But poor nutrition will cause all kinds of issues, so you need to work with your vet on that. Kidney issues: This is another leading cause of bad breath, and your vet will need to do bloodwork to evaluate it. You need to do this sooner rather than later, because kidney issues only get worse over time if not addressed. These aren’t the only possibilities, but the point is, you need advice from a vet not a group of pet owners. We can give you emotional support but not medical advice. Good luck! |
Thank you everyone for your informative answers. have been to the vet on numerous occasions, but think he thinks I'm being neurotic 😳 I think foremost, need to get her diet sorted. |

My puppy is almost 6 month old and has been massively teething which has caused her to have terrible breath but it’s just due to the teething. She also will do weird stuff with her mouth and tongue when she has a loose tooth or has lost a tooth. I’m wondering if teething has some to do with what’s going on. If she is having tummy issues though she definitely needs to go to the vet! |
