Concerns About Mouth Itching/Skin Irritation Hello! I have a 3 year old yorkie and for the past few months I’ve noticed him scratching his face a lot, rubbing his face on the carpet, etc. It seems like the area around his mouth is bothering him. Over the last couple months with all of the itching he does, it appears the area has gone a slight pink colour and is losing fur. Does anyone know what might cause this? We have tried changing his food to a different protein source but I am not really sure what he might be allergic to, if it is due to allergies. I tried taking away some of his rubber toys as well as I wasn’t sure if that could be causing it either. Any insights would be appreciated. |

Most allergies are environmental. I would definitely go to the vet and have them look at what’s going on and check his teeth. It sounds miserable for him. |
Could he be allergic to the food bowl? Is it plastic? I have heard they can cause issues. It also could be a tooth that is bothering him. You might want to have the vet check him out. |
My guy went through the same this, constant scratching under the nose area, was losing hair, skin was red and irritated. Took him to vet, he had environment and food allergies. He was put on Cytopoint shots every 4 to 6 weeks, I changed his food from grain free kibbles to regular food. Over a period of one year the scratching stopped. Now he has occasional environmental allergies issues, mostly in the Spring when the pollen count is high. The vet gives him a Cytopoint shot and a 3 day supply of Apoquel. If the pollen count stays high he'll get another Cytopoint shot 4 to 6 weeks later. |
Thanks matese, I am figuring it is some kind of allergy and I have changed his food a couple times but I haven’t been able to land on one that doesn’t seem to bother him. I have taken him to the vet a couple times regarding this and they tried him on an anti-itch medication that didn’t seem to help. I recently got a prescription for him again for a new medication called Trimeprazine 5mg (Vanectyl-P) and it is supposed to be an anti-histamine. I will see how that goes for him. He does seem like his mouth bothers him more when he comes back in from being outside, and he loves eating grass so I am not sure if the allergy could be to grass. He also seems more bothered after eating wet canned food that I give him so I am not sure if that is contributing as well. |

As for antihistamines, I have never had them work well. My vet uses Cytopoint which is almost like a miracle. The injection runs around $35 but usually lasts for up to two months. I have one pup who only gets about 4/year. My vet has not prescribed Apoquel (I personally won't use it because it is immuno suppressive and so far, have been very lucky with the Cytopoint).... Cytopoint alone has been wonderful plus Convenia if there is bacterial infection along with the skin issue. The more they scratch the more likely they are to get an infection. I presently have 3 allergy pups. One is my own, the other two are fosters. Each is different. Has your vet done a skin scraping and viewed under a scope? |
Let me also add: ruling out a food allergy is a VERY intensive process. https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2017/01/food-allergies/ |

The vet has not done a skin scraping either. Is that something I should request of them? |

His food bowls for the wet food were plastic but I recently bought him a small ceramic bowl to use instead. |
