Prescription Diets After reading many threads past and present regarding GI issues, I would have never thought that my older Biewer would end up possibly being put on a prescription diet. We are not at that point yet but it could be a possibility if current treatment fails. Can any of you here that have pups with similar issues tell me of your experience on prescription diets (Hills, Purina, etc). How did they work for your pup's GI issues? Did one work for you better than the other? How long did it take for your pup to adjust and for you to start seeing results with better stool production? Your input is appreciated :animal-pa |
My last yorkie had genetic IBD and my vet put her on Hills Prescription Diet ID. She did very well on it and she liked the food we gave the dry dogfood. I feel it is a good company and you can call them to ask questions. I guess when nothing else works then it is best to do the food from the vet. Hope all goes well. Susan |

One other question is that how did you change your pup over to the new food? I have heard that some did not even have to mix their current with the new script, but, I personally would not go that route. |
Callie had IBD and was put on the hydrolyzed small breed Royal Canin food and it worked pretty fast. My others did not do well with the soy in it though so we went to Royal Canin small breed sensitive digestion which is not a prescription food but works very well. Royal Canin foods are said to be the most palatable of of the dog foods. I have trust issues with Hills after there recalls and how things were handled. It is really weird but my youngest will only eat Royal Canin brand foods. We switched her ASAP because she was having strait liquid poo so there was no reason so switch slowly. I think prescription foods definitely have their place. |

My pup had a bout of pancreatitis many years ago and I keep her on either Hills or Royal Canin. I am a royal Canin fan. To be able to,purchase the prescription diet food you will need a vets authorization or purchase it from a vet. |
I prefer RC out of the "Big 3". They are the most trustworthy, IMO. Jackson had pancreatitis and was put on Royal Canin GI low fat. It works very well for a lot of dogs but for Jax.... he was ravenous to the point of waking me up at 2am crying for food. He just did not digest it well but then we discovered he may have IBD so he is just a weirdo who is super sensitive. After 2 months of diarrhea, we tried the RC PW moderate calorie kibble. It solved his issues within 48 hours! However then he started getting picky and choosy with when he would eat it, he doesn't like kibble by itself. But hard to find low fat wet food that is grain-free and low enough in fat for the pancreatitis. We settled on Weruva. We have had amazing luck with it and are now feeding primarily Weruva wet food but he's costing me a fortune lol... But basically, I am a big fan of feeding what works for your dog! |
