Age to have first veterinary dental cleaning? What is the suggested age to have a Yorkies first veterinary dental cleaning? My guy is about to turn 1-year old and won't let me brush his teeth. He eats dry kibble and I put a bit of dental water additive in his water. He also enjoys using an assortment of Kong dental chew toys. I have searched the internet and the suggested age varies from six months to 2 - 3 years old. Your advice will be appreciated. |
It would be when the vet thinks it’s time. This will be different really for every dog some 2 years and some maybe not until 7 years. 1 is very young and shouldn’t need one unless he has very very bad teeth. |
Definitely, every dog is different. I have seen some go for years and some for only 1. Dental issues are thought to be genetic. Your vet will let you know when it is needed. |
We didn't know earlier and had to work with Bella to let us brush her teeth at around 6 months. She wouldn't open her mouth. We let her smell the toothbrush and toothpaste often and eventually got her to chew on the toothbrush which was a good start. You have to keep at it. In addition, we also use the water additive in her water and plaque tooth wipes. Bella was at the vet recently for her yearly check up which included a dental consultation. She's 2 years old. This is her first dental consultation and we weren't able to see a vet sooner due to Covid. I noticed a white spot on her gum and wasn't sure what it was earlier in the year. The vet said she still has retained baby teeth and they need to be extracted so the adult teeth can come out, so I will be scheduling a dental appointment for her within the next couple of weeks. At the same time he will remove the tartar build up, even though we brushed her teeth it's hard to reach at the back of her small mouth. He mentioned how important it is to keep brushing her teeth often afterwards. Hope this helps. |
Thanks for the replies. Rocky had some retained baby teeth removed when he was neutered between seven and eight months old. I too use a water additive and he plays with Kong dental chew toys. I give him one Greenie (tiny sized) before bedtime each night and hold it so he only takes small pieces with each bite. It takes him a lot of chews before he swallows so I hope that is helping clean his teeth at the gum line. His mouth is the one place he won't have any part of me touching. I will have the vet take a look at his next exam. |
With Bella I had her spayed at 5 months, before her first heat, suggested by our vet. At that time the vet said she still had retained all her baby teeth. I see now that there is an advantage of having a boy yorkie over a girl yorkie for which you can wait longer til he is neutered and hopefully all their baby teeth have fallen out. Oh well no matter what, we love our yorkies whether it's a girl or boy, haha. Take care. |

I was lucky that Rocky never began marking before his neutering at a little over 7 months. He is a year old next week and has not marked. My trainer said some neutered males will still occasionally mark. She really surprised me when she told me that some females will also mark. |
