Changing food So here’s the backstory. Molli is 10, last year in May we lost her fur brother Chibi and recently it’s come to my attention that her energy, vigor for life, coat and overall health has been down since then. I video chatted with a vet since her last actual visit went well and I think it’s her food. We were on Simply Nourish and I used to give more veggies when Chibi was around. Now we’ve been on Whole Hearted which seems like a great food but doesn’t seem to be working for us. I’d like to switch to freeze dried or air dried human grade food in mixture with canned food maybe? I ordered: Wellness Complete Health Natural Wet Canned Dog Food and The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Turkey Whole Food Clusters And a sample size of Frenchies Kitchen (What the vet recommended) but honestly that food is too expensive for me to feed on a regular basis. I’m hoping to make the Honest Kitchen last a month or at least 3 weeks between my 2 dogs who usually eat 1/3 cup in the morning and 1/2 a cup in the evening. I don’t want either of them to get pancreatitis or diabetes like my Chibi did but cost is a factor. Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks! |
Could you mix in some other, cheaper dog food or cottage cheese, veggies or other things to make each serving go farther? |
Dog food Chibi was a beautiful yorkie. I hope you can get another yorkie to be company for Mollie. As for food I have been looking at various ones. I feed my yorkies Lifes Abundance which I order on line. Just haven't found another I like. |

My Finny had the same problems you described and more. I switched her to Dr Harvey’s Canine Health in January and I’m seeing a vast improvement in her energy, attentiveness, alertness, etc. Just the other night on her potty break I caught her hunting something in the garden... she hasn’t done that for years. |
It is rarely food when a pup is older. If you have not had full blood work done on her in the past year, I urge you to do so. |
If it happened around the time of losing her brother it could be depression related. I had looked at whole hearted’s food when I switched foods but it seemed like majority of them used peas, lentils and potatoes a lot which is causing heart disease. Is the one you are feeding using those ingredients? If so it might be related to a heart issue. |
Yes, I attributed it at first to being depressed from Chibi passing but it’s been over a year. We feed the chicken and brown rice and chicken and pea so yeah it does have those ingredients. She got a check up last October after we adopted Taco but not bloodwork. Taco also had been picky about his food for about 3 days until I started adding the wellness wet. I’m mostly wondering about adding different proteins. Like if I’m feeding the Honest Kitchen Turkey as the main meal should I feed canned turkey also? Can I switch between canned chicken, beef and turkey as a topper or will that upset their tummies? |
