Senior with diabetes I have a yorkie that was recently diagnosed with diabetes. It has been about 6 weeks and does not seem to be doing any better yet. About every two weeks vet increase insulin.:( |
I'm so sorry but it may take a while to find the amount of insulin that will be needed. |
Diabetes So sorry to hear your baby was diagnosed with diabetes. My little Yorkie girl Katie was diagnosed with diabetes when she was around 8 yrs. old. She has been on insulin (vetsulin I believe it's called, I get it from vet) for 3 yrs. now and doing well. The diabetes did give her cataracts so she is blind but gets around just fine. She started on 1 unit of insulin initially and moved up to 1.5 units and has stayed there for years now. We do test her blood every 3 months since she is stable, but has had no issues. Hardest thing is she is only around 5 lbs. so we have to feed her well. She gets Royal Canin Glycobalance 2x a day with boiled chicken and I usually put some veggies in as well. Being rigid with her schedule and being fed 12 hrs. apart, 5am and 5pm with her insulin shot 1/2 hr. after each feeding has worked for her. The vet is amazed at how well she is doing so I just wanted to share Katie's story with you. Debbie |

Thank you for this. I have a senior and we are struggling to get her levels down. How heavy is your pup and how much food do you give her? Mine is 10lbs and I am afraid I might be overfeeding. |
