little nasties Recently had a minor health scare, myself not Freya lol, and realized I needed to start walking, lose weight, etc, am VERY out of shape. And I want to bring Freya along. She has never been walking. She's only been out the 1.5 years I've had her two times! But I can't just toss her outside with a harness and leash, cause...she's unprotected. Vet recommended Seresto collar for the little nasties, because of her size. I found an old post here saying it wouldn't work on a long haired dog because it has to rest against the skin. So obviously I need an alternative. I'd love suggestions from anyone who has or has had a Yorkie Freya's size: 3.5 to 4 lbs. Not sure exact size. Her last weighing was 3.34lbs...but she's filled out since then. And one more thing...leash. The one I have seems a bit weighty the two times I used it, is 5/8" Research revealed they come in 1/4"? The only thing I could find on Petsmart was those retractable things, don't think I want that kind. Any link or links would be appreciated. |
Don't recommend using a collar because they can get caught on something and choke a little one. I use Buddy Belt harness. They are a little costly but well worth the money and the security. They are impossible for your little one to escape and get out of the harness and they can't choke. I've actually picked Gidget up (she weighs 5lbs) by the harness and no harm done. It's not around her neck. Check chewy.com for leashes. |
Simparica is a chewable fast-acting oral flea and tick preventative pill, it is also safe to give it all year round. You can order it from www.chewy.com. They have it for dogs weighing 3 to 6 pounds. It requires a prescription from your veterinarian, chewy will call your vet to make sure your dog can be given it. You can also call them and ask about the leash size . I have Cody on Simparica for 5 years with no side affects and no fleas or ticks, Cody weighs 12 pounds Here's is Chewy's # 800-672-4399. |
I use nexgard and have pretty much since it came out with no issues. My vet uses it too. No matter what you use it works by getting in the blood stream so whether is a pill, a topical or a collar it all gets into the blood stream. |
My Cali is just under 4 pounds. We use Revolution all year round and never had any problems. I do Have a Saresto collar i keep in a ziplock bag for occasional big hikes in the woods. |

I'm pretty sure I know who you are, are on my Facebook lol, so I know your babies are HUGE lol. I just want to make sure anything I use won't affect her tiny lil self. |

We used Revolution from the start (Fabian was only a couple of pounds when we brought him home, although much larger now.) My vet said it's not overkill to use the two products together ***on my particular dog***, especially up here in tick country. |

Sorry to hear you are having health problems, I can SURELY relate. The reason I wanted a Yorkie and bought Katy was that I wanted a small dog as a constant companion THAT COULD RIDE IN MY BICYCLE BASKET. Almost 6 years ago I too had gained so much weight it was affecting my health....and I used to be so active, thin and healthy. I bought a bicycle and started riding again. I could NOT go a full mile when I started, but kept at it. You can see my weight loss photos and blog at doesmybuttlookbiginthesaddle dot com. My husband and I ride bicycles at least 5 times a week. We average about 12 miles on a ride. The thing about a bike; it is not only a FULL BODY Work Out, you feel like a 12 y/o old again riding! Walmart has the light weight leashes in many colors for $5, ebay has them for .99 Having your dog with you as you loose weight, SUCH A BONUS! |

So how is this going? Have you found the leash and flea stuff you were hoping for? |

KATY, our Yorkie, LOVES RIDING! We also have a Springer Dog Attachment that our GSD LOVES! One in particular, Teanna, goes nuts when we get the bikes out; and is sorely hurt when it's not her day to go. We can only take them so far, and weather has to be 'just right' for Baby Bear (our dogs) to go. For Christmas my Husband bought me another of the Bicycle Baskets by Schwinn, we really like that type. I use the Basket in a Shopping Basket in Stores for Katy to ride in. She goes unnoticed inside but she can see everything. |
I never ever use flea collars. If the dog tries to work it off it’s neck, and gets it stuck in it’s mouth, it will be poisoned in short order. I would only use one on dogs that grow under coats. Yorkies skin is way too sensitive, especially with very fresh out of the bag flea collars. |
