Hercules I have a 13 yr old male Yorkie. He seems to do great despite his age but I noticed that he has a cataract in his right eye really bad. And the other eye you can see the beginnings of a cateraic. I worry about his blindness. he doesn't do a lot of things he used to but I think its due to being an old man. He'll come and love on me and sit on my lap. Really other wise he's doing great. He is completely deaf now too. He's my first baby and I love him so much. I dont think its time for him to cross the rainbow bridge but my husband mentions it often. If he was in pain or completely disabled then I would consider it. He's all 2.5 lbs. He eats and drink just fine. I do monitor that big time because he is so little. |
We had a wonderful schnauzer, named Lucky, who lived to be almost fifteen. Toward the end he was deaf, and had cataracts in both eyes, but he was otherwise healthy. He functioned well around the house, and even managed to learn to live in a new home in Florida when we retired. He loved to be outside to enjoy the sunshine, and would locate where the pool edge was by smelling for the chlorine. We finally had to help him to the rainbow bridge when he acquired dementia, and began falling into the pool. At that point he was unable to really participate in family life, and our fear of having him leave us by drowning if left unsupervised for even a minute, made us have that "hard conversation" with our vet. Our little 5 pound poodle, Beau, is nearly 13 now and has developed a cataract which limits his sight. He is also going deaf. Once again, we are forced to face the fact that his time is limited...but we help him enjoy each and every day to the fullest level that he can. He still has the energy to play like a madman for a few days a week, then sleep for days after! We are not to that point yet, and it sounds like you are not either. My only advice is that you will know when it is time, and do not make him linger because you will miss and grieve him. Our beloved companions deserve to have a loving and kind release. |
Welcome to YT, keep the faith, enjoy every day he is with you, don't think about the future, there is no way to prepare yourself. As for his blindness, do not move any furniture around, he knows where everything is placed, moving things around will confuse him. My now passed girl was a big girl weighing in at 17 Lbs, she was with me until she was 17 years old, blind, deaf slept most of the day, I would enjoy her when she would wake up. Seniors are the sweetest. |
