Yorkie Owner Fed Her Yorkie M&M's!

Well, Yoda was out with his Mommy the other day and an elderly lady approached them because Yoda was so cute of course. She began talking about her Yorkie, which lived 18 years but died recently, and how her Yorkie just LOVED to eat M&M's! Yoda's Mommy was quite astounded, but I guess it takes quite a bit of chocolate to seriously injure a Yorkie? Not that we would ever give Yoda chocolate or anything, but from the sounds of it, that lady would give her Yorkie M&M's as a treat quite often! But I would think 18 years is probably on the upper spectrum of a Yorkie's life span, isn't it?

I have heard people say this too! "Oh it's okay to give your dog chocolate, I do all the time, etc" Crazy!

I just can't believe how negligent some of these people are with their dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs.... :mad:

We even put up our Yorkies while we are eating AND Clean the floor under the kitchen table (especially where the kids sit!) before letting them back out of taxi's. Our yorkies get doggy treats, and look upon getting their vitamin as a treat. :) People food is a No No, here. I have heard of the Yorkie that goes everywhere, even in the car to McDonalds, and looks forward to that nice fresh fry after the pickup window. But not here. It is so easy to spoil a Yorkie without compromising their health.

Chocolate will not kill them
 

I had my first yorkie for 14 years and he got one mini pnut butter cup a day til the day he died, just for the record he was 17 when he died, totally healthy, in 17 years, he went to the vet once for illness. My two yorkie boys that are both a year old, get to split one half of a pnut butter cup a day, spoiled, yes negligent, I think not. I asked the vet and he said tiny amounts will not kill your dog. I had a mini poodle that weighed about 11 pounds and got a hold of a large bag of Oreo cookies, other than lots of poopsies, it did nothing to him. In everything in life, moderation.

Wow, that's so interesting. People always told me that dogs can't eat any chocolate what so ever. No grapes and chicken bones either, because grapes have something toxic in them and chicken bones are small and might get stuck in their throat. :confused:

I have heard the difference between chicken bones and beef is that chicken bones will splinter, beef does not. Even our big dog doesn't get any bones unless they are beef. Even the thought of chincken bones splintering and getting stuck is Sooo scary

WOW! This lady was so blessed to have had her Yorkie live 18 years, that is awesome. I think 18 years is on the higher spectrum for any breed Im guessing.

Regarding the M & M's, it sounds as if she didn't give him too many since he lived this long.??

I just thought I would add my two and a half cents here...

I have had several people over the years tell me how bad chocolate is for dogs, deadly even. You can imagine my horror when I came home one day and found my dog Nova ( a doberman)had stood up to the counter and knocked my cake keeper over and ate the contents, a super rich double fudge cake with pieces of chocolate bars accenting each slice. (this was a great cake by the way)Anyways I had a compleate come apart thinking my dog was going to die. I rushed her to the vet and from there we called the poison control hotline for animals. I was then told that yes chocolate can be dangerous to dogs, but there are a few things to consider. The amount of chocolate that they eat, and the kind of chocolate that they eat. The amount can vary quite a bit from one chocolate to antoher for instance, milk has hardly any effect if any if given in reasonable amouts, (i.e a yorkie can have m&m's and mini peanit butter cups ok, however you might not want to pass them that slice of cake) The darker chocolates is where is gets a bit tricky. Special Dark still has a lot of other stuff and though it will not kill them will definalty give them a really bad case of runs. (we are talking tiny amounts here by the way) Bakers chocolate is the one to worry about, it has a very high chocolate content and the toxins for dog are very high, a regular sized bar for a doberman will make it very, very sick, a regular sized bar for a yorkie will indeed cause death.

So there you go, milk chocolate on the occasion is ok ( from animal poison control) as long as it is given in small amounts and your own dog's system can handle it, if they cant you will know it but the amount of poopsie you see very quickly. And be wary of anything darker, becasue it will likely upset their system.

Just as a side note, Nova was fine after that, licked her chops all the way there and back from the vets. And until she passed would always try and sneak cake here and there becasue she loved it so much.
