Feeling guilty Mama Cash had his booster & checkup today at the vets & were told hes overweight. Hes 4 years old now & 8.6lbs. We trust our vet and want our boy to be healthy (i admit I dont think he is fat, is this mama eyes?) Im guilty of giving him bits from our dinner and treats more or less on demand. Its my fault but please help me out - how can i cut down treats without Cash thinking hes done wrong? His health comes first. Cash is walked at least twice a day & we have lots of play. Cash is our first dog, hes my baby boy and to be honest Ive treated him like a baby. Now i cant stop crying thinking im damaging his health. I will be grateful for any advice or to hear of similar situations out there. Thank you! Evie |
Replace doggie treats with frozen green cut beans, thawed or frozen. No calories and most dogs love cut beans. You can also take out a few kibbles and give the cut beans in replacement. Weight loss in dogs must me a very slow process, dogs cannot lose weight at a fast rate as humans, if you see one or 2 ozs, weight loss a month that is good, even if you think it is not a lot, for the dog it is. |
Especially in hot weather, Gidget likes frozen green peas as a treat. She sees no difference in having them versus having table scraps. I've also opened a can of carrots, poured off the liquid, rinsed them sell and given them to her as a treat. She loves them, too. Try several different things to see which ones get the best response. |
I also found out that I have a very poor eye for measurement (even using the same bowl) Kibble or raw, I either feed too much or not enough say for 1 cup of food. So I now use my weigh scale, when out and about a level measuring cup :) |

I worry giving a green bean or other raw human veggie, which now he can tolerate unlike few years ago, will stick more to his teeth, maybe cause decay. What do you all think? |
I agree, I took my little boy Bailey to the Vet and was told he had to lose a pound. I told my Son that him losing a pound is like me losing 50lbs..😂 |

My Vet gave me a Sample Of Hill’s Dog Food. The Sample is a 9 1/2lb. Bag. She said it would help him lose weight, plus it has a little something in there for his bones. He’s 12yrs. though and has some Arthritis in his hind knees. Your Baby, May be too young for this but it doesn’t say for weight control or bones. My Vet was concerned about his heart, he’s good but, if I were you, thin Cash Down. It won’t happen overnight, it may be just a fraction of a lb. a few weeks to a month. You can sure ask your Veterinarian to see if there’s a different one or if this is a good food your Baby. It is Prescriptions Dog Food, so you can only get it at a Veterinarians Office. When I asked how much it would cost she said around $20-24. I pay more than that for my boys food now, and it’s just a 6lb. Bag. Best Part, Bailey Loves it!!! He LOVES it! Sorry I wrote a book but, that’s the facts. I sure hope I Help!♥️😊 |
Cheerios are a ,ow fat treat! Also Fromm liver treats are low fat! |
Dogs don't know how big a treat is. Really, they don't. I limit treats anyway, but I also cut the larger treats into smaller pieces. Partly because I'm frugal, but also because it just needs to be a treat, not an entire snacky-snack meal substitute. We have a new puppy who responds really well to pettings, and doesn't care so much about treats. He'd rather we give him an ear rub and some attention. I'd rather give him an ear rub, too. It just feels so good to give him something that he adores and will work for. It warms my heart to get those squirmy puppy wiggles from the touch of my hand on his head. |
It's going to take a bit of experimenting to find the right "treat" that is good for him and that he also enjoys! My yorkie loved ice berg lettuce. Yes, you read that correctly, lettuce. He would go bonkers for it! But just the white super crispy part. It had the most satisfying crunch sound for him. |
