Flea/Tick "Tags" Has anyone ever had any luck with these? https://www.onlynaturalpet.com/produ...ag/999024.aspx The reviews are pretty good but it's a bit of a pricey gamble. Jackson has a history of pancreatitis and also potentially has IBD (hasn't been confirmed through biopsy yet) but I am nervous about any oral flea/tick meds. He used to take Nexgard. Quite a few of the IBD dog people I have become friends with online do not do oral chews for fleas and ticks. My vet also did not recommend them for Jackson just in case he has a reaction since it's oral and would be in his system for 30+ days. But I'm also not big on going back to topicals as I hate the way it gets so yucky in their hair AND you have to wait 24+ hours before going in water and in the summer he is literally in the pool every single day. He has not had any flea/tick meds since October and that's been fine, we have had zero issues, but Spring is arriving and we do tend to see a decent amount of ticks in the summer. So I usually keep the pups on something from May through September or October. We do NOT have issues with fleas, like ever. I've never even seen a flea. But the ticks I would like to try to keep at bay. I was thinking something like this tag could be beneficial in conjunction with sprays and/or shampoos and such when I know they are going to be outside in the grasses etc. I don't know - thoughts? Any one have success with this? My other option could be Seresto collar. But I won't leave it on all the time so I do not know if it works that way (only putting on when we go outside). |
If you are giving a chew for heart worms and is doesn’t bother him why would an oral flea and tick med bother him? Just kinda wondering. |

I determined that he may have a corn allergy through trial and error and Heartguard has corn in the ingredients. I *think* Nexgard does too but I may be remembering it wrong. So anyway I ultimately decided on Interceptor for heartworm preventative and hoped for the best. He had his first dose about a week ago and has been okay, thankfully. My vet and Internal Med Specialist wanted me to use Revolution but that is a topical for heartworm AND fleas and I do not even have a problem with fleas, ever... but I do with ticks, therefore he would have had to been double dosed with a second flea/tick medicine and had a double dose of the flea stuff, when we didn't even NEED the flea protection to begin with - if that makes sense. Anyway, I'd just prefer to be as cautious as possible and not mess anything up. If the Interceptor did not work out, I'd have been looking at the plain Heartgard unflavored pill, but it ONLY protects against heartworms (not hookworms, etc etc). So long explanation to just say: I am mainly looking to help with repelling ticks when we go out on walks or to parks or dog events etc and keep anything I am putting in his digestive system to a minimum. Depending on the year, we sometimes don't even have issues with them. Like last year I only dosed him once in June and didn't see any ticks so ended up not giving him another dose until September. So it seems to just depend on the season. |
I use a topical liquid for Gidget for ticks and fleas. Seems to work fine for her. Have been using PetArmour for the last year or so. She likes her heart worm chewables but not the ones for flea and ticks. So switched to the one I apply to her skin and it works just fine. |

It's SO hard when everything works fine for "most dogs" but with us with dogs that have some sort of issue, there's always so much extra concern and research that has to go into it. I think you're right and I will just play it by ear and see if I find any ticks on him. I check him over every night anyway. And I was thinking of buying the special shampoos or sprays that I could at least use on days that I know he is going to be outside a lot or in taller grass or something like that. I like the idea of the Seresto collar. But I wouldn't leave it on him 24/7 since him and Lola wrestle and play a lot etc and I would be uncomfortable with it. But I think you're *supposed* to leave it on all the time for it to work effectively, but I would prefer to only put it out when we are going outside for a long period of time etc. |

Ticks are like cockroaches: they're seemingly impervious to everything. We find ticks in Jan/Feb in NH when it's below zero, alive and attached to dead leaves. I use both Revolution (year around) and a Seresto collar (March til it runs out) upon my vet's advice after Fabian got ticks with just the Revolution. (The Revolution controls American dog ticks, but not deer ticks.) The reason you have to leave the collar on is that it's slowly activated over time by skin contact. So no contact, no protection. I'm generally a"no collar" gal, but here, the benefit outweighs the risk. |
