Feeding my yorkie puppy
 
I have an 18 wk puppy currently "free-feeding". She weighs 3lbs 3 oz. When should she switch to feeding once or twice a day?

I would never go to just once a day as an adult or puppy. I still free feed mine. You could probably go to twice a day at 8 or 9 months.

I have always free fed ours, and have never had an overweight dog. My three actually start the day with boiled chicken breast shreds on top of kibble, then graze throughout the day. They actually all stop by their bowls around noontime for "lunch", the eat some more when I am preparing our dinner. A mouthful on their way to bed, and they are happy campers! :)

That’s pretty much how I do it. I had to do the chicken to make sure Callie ate enough to take her meds.

We are feeding 3 times per day at 8 months. Once a day is too long for this little ones to go without food. I believe our Mike was eating 4 or 5 times per day at 18 weeks. Why don't you want to continue free feeding?

I have a 6 month old I try to feed him 3-5 times a day plus leave food available all day for grazing the problem I have is he doesn’t want to eat I’ve tried softening his food adding food appetizers to it ant to make things worse he’s scared of bowls the only way I get him to have some kibble is when I’ve hid or dropped the food he thinks he’s finding treasures but still eats only 6 kibbles at a time the most he’s ate is 15 in one day
I’ve tried everything my vet has suggested nothings working.... any suggestions

Welcome to YT,

Try putting his food in a flat dish, like a saucer. A lot of dogs will not eat from a bowl. I had one that would only eat from a saucer while her sisters ate out of bowls. You can also try sprinkling a little Parmesan cheese over his food, most dogs love Parmesan cheese and will eat what ever it's on.

I have a tray I put my pups dog food in and it spreads it out. You could also try puzzle toys like ball you hit and food comes out. Have you tried feeding what the breeder was feeding? Royal Canin for Yorkies is also great for picky eaters.

What is the weight of your little guy, reason I ask is, if your boy is tiny they do not eat a lot of food,they have tiny stomachs, 15 kibbles to you is not a lot of food, but 15 kibbles a day can be a sufficient amount of food for a small dog.

What does he weigh.

I measure out the food for my yorkies in the am. They are not little ones. They get fed 3 times a day. They really like Lifes Abundance dry food. You order this on line. I put a little warm water in their dish a d put so e Fromm turkey pumpkin pate with the dry on top.
If the food is tasty your yorkie is more likely to eat. The pate is easy to eat. I hope this helps.

I have two puppies and both hate bowls. I use flat plates for them. Also, my pups are very picky eaters. I have tried many kibbles and finally landed on Stella and Chewy raw coated rabbit kibble. They really like it. I also sometimes add goats milk to keep it interesting from time to time. I hope you find something that works for your pup.
