Need Homemade diet with Low Purine because of Stones My 4 lb male Yorkie had recent surgery for huge bladder stone removal. It was tested and came back Ammonium Urate. Vet recommended Hills U/D for the rest of his life. I started it, but yorkie hates it ....dry and wet. Hills prescription diets have recently been added to recall list. Im afraid to use it any more. After researching problem, I have found out that feeding low purine diets might work for him. Anyone out there that has a success rate of no return stones on feeding a homemade low purine diet for stones. please share! |
Try the Royal Canin version of that food. Royal Canin is said to be more palatable. If you want to home cook your going to need to work with a vet nutritionist. If you just find a recipe online it’s not going to be balanced and will cause your dog more harm then good. |

Low Purine Diet Thanks for your reply. This is a trickie complicated business - preventing stones from recurring. I am following[U] Lew Olson's, Home cooked Diet for low Purine from her book "Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs. She is one of the few PHD dog owners to tackle this issue. |
I have no expertise in this area, but I would start with the fact that her degree is NOT in pet nutrician it is in Social Work. I would want to know what a veterinarian nutricianist thinks |

If you truky want to do a home diet, you can reach out to companies like Just Food For Dogs. They are vets that will come up with a recipe you could follow tailored to your pup's needs. They will require medical history and all contact information for your regular vet as they would like your vets input before creating your recipe. |

I would only use a vet nutritionist for home cooking. You can get a free diet at www.balanceit.com It is run by a vet nutritionist and they are VERY helpful if you need to telephone them. You do need to set up a profile on their website and they will contact your vet for an ok to formulate the diet. You do have to purchase their supplement, but you need supplements! .. and the bottle lasts for about 3 months for a yorkie. As to Hill's RX foods. I have pups on their RX foods...I have long trusted this company. I checked the lot numbers and continued to feed these foods that do save lives! I have a foster on Hill's UD (he likes it, but I have heard that some don't), a personal pup on Hill's Ultra ZD and a foster on Hill's Low Fat ID. It is the first time I have seen Hill's have a recall with their dog foods. It was unfortunate but I trust they have fixed the problem. |
