My yorkie get anxiety when given a sedative, why? My 2y/o Male yorkie does not like to be groomed. He had a bad experience with a groomer at a young age and it has traumatize him. He's afraid of the scissors, the clippers, but he will let them bathe him. The scissors and clippers makes him very angry and he gets defensive and will bite. So the vet prescribed him Xanax, I've tried melatonin, and this makes him very hyper. So he had to be sedated, totally put to sleep to be groomed. Why does sedatives make him hyper??? And what can I do to calm him? |
Melatonin works different for dogs then humans. Some just react differently. Have you worked with a trainer or behavioralist on trying to fix the issues with the fear? |
I would also go down the desensitisation route has it would be better in the long run, yorkies need a lot of grooming and he can't have a sedative every time . I groom both of mine myself , it does take time and we don't use clippers but keep long coats so lots of rewards when brushing. Hope you find the right solution for your little one. |
My son reacts the same way to sedatives, pain killers. Orthopedist gave him small dose of Demerol IM and then injected Novacaine locally at fracture site to set a broken thumb as a toddler and he went ballistic! They had to wrap him in sheets until it wore off to keep him from hurting himself. To this day as a grown man, he shys away from taking anything for pain or sedation other than ibuprofen. Don't know why but some systems just react differently to medications. |
You should hire an animal behavior so that you will know what is happening to your pet. |
