Drinking Water Hello, one of my two Yorkies, Jake, doesn't like drinking water. I always add a little with his food but he doesn't like it much. I feed him a combination of wet and dry food. I think it's very important that he drinks water so was wondering whether a drinking fountain would attract him to it. Thank you for any advice! |
Welcome back, when my kid had major surgery he wouldn't drink any water, I was frantic because I didn't want him to go back for IV fluids. One of YT members suggested I make chicken soup no salt no onions added, carrots for flavor were ok. When the chicken is cooked let the broth cool and skim off as much fat as possible. Add just a TSP or 2 of broth to the drinking water depending on the size of the bowl, less is better then more. The rest of the broth pour into ice cube trays and freeze for later use. The chicken you can eat not for dogs. Since I have small bowls for my guy I added one TSP of broth, he drank the entire bowl of water. I added the broth to his water for almost one week before he would drink plain bottled water. Be careful not to add to much broth as the dog will drink all the water which may cause him to throw up. I have read they do sell canned chicken broth if you go that route make sure there is no salt or onion flavor added. I personally prefer to make it fresh because I know what is going into this broth, Hope this helps. |
THANK YOU! That sure does help and it's a great idea to freeze some of it. I have another Yorkie and four cats so I prepare a big bowl of fresh water once or twice a day and I'm sure all of them will appreciate the chicken broth, hopefully Jake will be interested, although I've got a feeling he will! |
If there is water in the food he probably doesn’t need much extra water. Wet food contains a lot of water. One of my boys is not a huge drinker but he is fine and healthy. I don’t recommend water fountains because when I just had Callie I had maybe 6 different fountains and no matter how easy to clean they said they are they aren’t and they get very gross very fast. |

My Kaji was a bad water drinker. One thing I did that he really enjoyed is provide him iceberg lettuce to snack on. It's mostly water. Kaji loved the crunchy white leaves. |
Hello again! Lovetodream88 thanks for your advice, I’m happy to forget about the water fountain, it’s extra cost anyway. DvlshAngel985 thank you, I will try giving him the lettuce, he does love veggies, especially cabbage. Matese I will try not to be a stranger again, I also posted about my other Yorkie, Lucy, who has a problem with her kidneys and liver, thankfully she’s doing well for the time being. I have tried putting in some chicken broth and so far Jake hasn’t attempted to drinking out of the bowl but I’m going to put in a little extra because I know he loves chicken! |

The vet isn’t concerned but I just wanted to make sure jake gets enough water. With Lucy having kidney problems made me more aware how important water is. He doesn’t seem interested in it even if I put in a little chicken broth in a small bowl of water but I know he loves it on its own, so every now and then I think I will give him a little. Thanks a lot everyone! |
