Wee Freya's Vet Trip It finally happened! Lol. Freya had her vet visit. This is something that should have happened five months ago when I bought her! There were some obstacles. Anyway... It's good and bad. She did well. She was nervous but didn't pee lol. The vet said she looked up, overall, but...she's too thin at 2.15lbs. I KNEW it. I knew she was too thin! She wants me to feed Freya a little more than 1/8 cup x 3. Stool sample was sent for evaluation, and a broad spectrum dewormer was given. I have two syringes of dewormer for the 14th and the 7th. And after that, if she still is too thin...liver tests? Something like that she said. I'm kinda worried. The dental isn't so great. What, five or six retained teeth? Oy. My research said such a procedure costs 100-200 per tooth, including anesthesia, etc etc. Heartworming and spaying has been put off for a bit. Age, she says. And it all cost me 187 bucks lol. Who knows how much more for her follow up in 4 weeks. I have to TRY and fatten her up. |
Is she eating regularly? It sounds like you are feeding her on a schedule. I would suggest free feeding (leaving the bowl out with food 24 hours) until she gains weight. Boiled chicken breast and white rice is usually something they will gobble up. Maybe a little bit of that to supplement the regular food? On the bright side I am sure things will work out. On the not so bright side yorkies are not cheap to care for. If I walk away from the vet with only a $187 tab I am happy. |

I've been feeding her 1/8 cup of Science Diet 3 times a day, plus a Dentastix. Sometimes she won't eat it. Sometimes it's only 1/8 x 2, but I try to make her eat three times. I will try what you said. I have a month to "fatten" her up. |
I agree with free feeding, it is suggested food be available at all times for puppies. These tiny ones have tiny stomachs, they can only eat little bits. I would measure one cup of food and measure how much is left over when you give her a fresh bowl, this way you will see how much she ate in a day. Chicken and rice have no calories, it may fill her up but not fatten her up. You should transition her to a puppy food that is high in calories. |
She is still a puppy and won’t need an actual dental they will just pull the puppy teeth there is not cutting or anything so it shouldn’t cost anything like that. I don’t know why they want to wait on heart worm prevention that’s a bit risky and scary to play with. Is she on a puppy food? |

Science Diet small breed puppy. I think the wait is because of her thinness. I have samples to give her in 1 month, Hartguard? |
So glad the vet trip worked out for you. I suspect puppy food will help. Did the vet suggest exercise a bit before her meals? Also, you can ask the vet if he/she recommends an additive/appetite enhancer. My late sweetie always polished off her breakfast a little after her morning walk. |

I tried cheese on her food, not sure it's working. I think the lil minx is enjoying the cheese and ignoring the rest! I don't want her to not want kibble. Well, she's been on puppy food since I got her, same stuff as her previous owner. Vet asked what her parents were like, but I didn't get her from the original breeder, so I have no clue. I was reluctant to buy her at first for that reason, but I couldn't find a female and was anxious to love and be loved! I wouldn't trade her, believe me! |

We always have free fed ours, and give them boiled chicken on top for breakfast. They eat at approximately the same time my husband and I have our lunch and dinner, and "graze" a little throughout the day. The vet has said that they are all at their optimal weight, and we have never had an overweight dog. |
We also free feed but the funny thing is they don't touch the food when we are not home. |
