Hacking & Coughing Puppy We brought our Lily home about 6 weeks ago, and she’s now 17 weeks old.The seller said she had a cold and was on medication for 10 days before we got here. She continues to have a cough that is most prevalent first thing in the morning. Most of the day she is fine, but does cough once in awhile through the day. Her overall health is great, eating, gaining weight, and potty is normal for puppy her age. Have had her to the vet several times now, antibiotics on two occasions, chest X-rays and now a medication to reduce inflammation. Lungs and trachea are fine, no issues identified. However, so far nothing has changed her coughing episodes. I’ve read through several posts and it seems that this type of coughing is not uncommon with Yorkies. Anyone have success in treating this type of problem? She is such a sweet dog and we want to get her feeling better.. |
In a puppy, this type of coughing is usually kennel cough (bordetella). Has she been given a bordetella vaccine? If so, that is where she actually contracted the kennel cough. The main concern with kennel cough in young puppies is that it can so easily progress to pneumonia, which can be very serious in puppies. She may need to be on another antibiotic and I would recommend a cough suppressant if her coughing interferes with her sleep at night. In young puppies, kennel cough can months to get rid of. I would not be allowing *any* kennel cough vaccines for a very long time, if ever again. The bordetella vaccine is not a core vaccine btw. The 'coughing' common to yorkies is actually just reverse sneezing - and this is not a health concern. The other thing common to yorkies is collapsing trachea (CT), but this doesn't sound like that at all. |
Thanks for the feedback. Our vet ruled out kennel cough. So it remains to be undetermined as to the root cause of the cough. One thread I read mentioned that the cough persists because the throat is not fully healed and the puppy finds that irritating and coughs. Any comments on how to relieve the irritation? |
I know it could be a long shot, but is your pup allergic to something? My dog was coughing so much and it was due to the grass we had growing in our yard. This website might help with suggestions in case it is allergies. https://www.enduraflap.com/blog/post...nal-allergies/ |
Thanks for the information. Our vet has dismissed allergies saying that puppies are not succeptible to allergens. However, I do appreciate the response and the cough does seem like an allergic reaction. |
At least two of mine did this as puppies and there was nothing wrong they were just getting fuzz from the toys and hair from rough playing with each other. They eventually grew out of it. |
Thank you. that is very reassuring to hear.... |
